Alyssa Milano is back in the fore with “The Grip of Vice” which is a hit on Netflix. However, when it was announced at the casting, the actress was not unanimous.
New success for Netflix with The Grip of Vice
Netflix seems to have hit the nail on the head again. For once, the platform offered its subscribers a film that was quick to hit. The Grip of Vice is available since January 13 and is currently among the ten most watched new releases in 93 countries, including France. It must be said that on paper the feature film had some arguments.
Adapted from the novel by Nora Roberts, The Grip of Vice is a thriller carried by Alyssa Milano. The actress will forever remain Phoebe from Charmed (1998-2006) and his presence alone must have motivated some to take a look at the film. Add to that a story of murder, lies and a touch of eroticism, and voila.
The Grip of Vice features Grace Miller (Alyssa Milano), an expert crime novelist. After the death of his sister, she discovers that the latter was leading a double life as a camgirl. She then decides to investigate with the police to find out who the killer is. She logically assumes that her murder must be related to her secret activity. And she will go so far as to put on a leather outfit to in turn become Desiree, the double imagined by her sister.
The casting of Alyssa Milano caused problems
If the film is on the way to becoming a new Netflix success, at the base, it was not won. Indeed, at the time of launching the production, The Grip of Vice got attracted the anger of readers. Some reacted whenAlyssa Milano has been announced for the casting. For them, the political ideas of the actress, openly liberal, posed a problem. And they were quick to tell author Nora Roberts on her Facebook page. Which obviously dismayed the latter, as relayed at the time EW.
A reader said she intended to BURN all my books in her collection for this acting choice. Think about it. Burn books. Do you have the image in mind?
Nora Roberts also posted his support for Alyssa Milano, also explaining the importance, for her, of respecting the opinions of others without tolerating insults.
I’m thrilled that Ms. Milano was cast in the adaptation. I’ve always believed that everyone is entitled to their political beliefs and has the right to express their opinions. But I don’t have to put up with the insults and ugliness on my Watch the Movie page when it comes out, or not. But saying bad things about an actress or threatening me does nothing but illustrate your own limitations.
In the end, this “bad buzz” will probably not have had too serious consequences. The Grip of Vice was watched by millions of subscribers on Netflix. A nice revenge for the novelist and the actress. The latter did not hesitate to post on her Instagram account the ranking of English-language programs from Netflix. On the week of January 10, The Grip of Vice is number 1 in the world with more than 45 million hours!
