Activision would have decided to skip Call of Duty in 2023, a first since 2005. The disappointing sales of CoD Vanguard would be the main reason.

In a new article from Bloomberg the journalist Jason Schreier advance that there will be no Call of Duty in 2023. According to his sources, it will take wait until 2024.

A first since 2005

In 2022, Activision plans to release Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2. On the other hand, the following year, it seems more complicated since the publisher would have already postponed the expected episode internally for 2023. A game developed by Treyarch studio.

According to the journalist, this would have nothing to do with the current takeover by Microsoft. No, here Vanguard’s disappointing sales would be the big problem. This opus would clearly not have achieved the objectives, leading the leaders to question the annual rate of releases.

To fill this void, Activision would offer DLC galore and one “new title multiplayer free-to-play“. The Treyarch teams would also be assigned to the development of the latter.

Towards the (expected) end of the annual Call of Duty?

In response to Jason Schreier’s article, an Activision spokesperson said:

We are planning several exciting premium and free-to-play experiences for this year, next and beyond. All other information is incorrect. We look forward to sharing more details when the time is right.

If this rumor is confirmed, it may be the beginning of a big change within the company. Indeed, from 2005 until today, players have had their annual dose of Call of Duty. When a lot of them are happy with this situation, others are tired, including developers.

At the end of January, Jason Schreier already revealed that various well-placed people had expressed the wish to stop releasing CoDs every year. He had indicated that such an upheaval would not occur before at least 2023, which is consistent with his new history.

Do you believe that Activision can really take the plunge and end the annual Call of Duty? Would that be a good thing? What do you expect from CoD 2022?
