The film Amsterdam was mainly inspired, for the character of Robert de Niro, by the true story experienced by Smedley Butler. This former general of the Marine Corps has distinguished himself not only by his feats of arms, but also by his denunciation of a vast conspiracy. He indeed claimed in 1934 to have been chosen to lead an army of 500,000 men whose goal was to assassinate President Franklin Roosevelt in order to establish fascism at the head of the United States. He claims to have refused this “offer” and denounced it publicly. The House of Representatives, however, refused to prosecute the people who were allegedly involved, including large fortunes on Wall Street and American industry.
Synopsis – In the 1930s, three friends witness a murder and become suspects themselves. They do not suspect that they are at the heart of a matter that is completely beyond them.
