Steven Spielberg moved Toronto International Film Festival audiences with “The Fabelmans”. A semi-autobiographical drama that promises to be overwhelming, as the magnificent trailer suggests.
The Fabelmans : a semi-autobiographical film
After fulfilling his dream of directing a musical with the superb West Side StorySteven Spielberg will soon be back in theaters with The Fabelmans. A drama that rightly pays homage to the power of dark rooms and films, defined as “dreams you never forget” from the first seconds of the trailer.
The Fabelmans tells the story of Sammy, played by Mateo Zoryon Francis-DeFord and Gabriel LaBelle, who has always been passionate about the seventh art. Growing up, the boy directs his first short films, encouraged to follow an artistic path by his mother Mitzi (Michelle Williams), while his father Burt (Paul Dano) advises him to consider a safer and more serious future. .

The separation of Steven Spielberg’s parents is one of the events of his life that most nourished his workand the anti-Semitic insults he had to face made him realize that he was an “outsider”. The filmmaker is directly inspired by it for The Fabelmansa semi-autobiographical feature co-written with Tony Kushner (Munich, Lincoln, West Side Story). The first images suggest a torrent of emotions as well as an intimate and sublime spectacle, magnified by performances hailed at the Toronto Film Festival where the film was presented, starting with that of Michelle Williams.
Seth Rogen, Jeannie Berlin, Judd Hirsch, Julia Butters, Oakes Fegley and David Lynch complete the cast of the drama, which Steven Spielberg has wanted to do for many years and which ended up materialized thanks to the “fear” caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
No retirement for Steven Spielberg
In Toronto, the director said about the need to make this film, quoted by France info :
I just felt that if I was going to leave anything behind, what did I really need to clear up and unpack about my mommy and my daddy and my sisters? It wasn’t now or never, but almost.
However, The Fabelmans does not mark the end of the career by Steven Spielberg, who added:
It’s not because I decided to retire and this would be my swan song. Don’t believe any of this!
The Fabelmans is to be discovered from January 25, 2023 at the cinema. Find the magnificent trailer at the top of the article.
