After the first three “Expendables” films were never more than two years apart, it’s now eight whopping years since Part 3 was released in cinemas. “The Expendables 3” wasn’t the only one that didn’t convince us, so we wouldn’t have been surprised if the makers around Sylvester Stallone had left it at a trilogy. But it has been known for a long time: mercenary ace Barney Ross (Stallone) and his team want to know it again. The fourth film has been in the works for a long time – and with its official theatrical release it will now be a whole lot more tangible.
The Expendables 4 hits US theaters on September 22, 2023 – So fans don’t even have to wait a year until what is perhaps the most famous action star line-up of the moment returns to the big screen once more. In addition to the long-established “Expendables” stars, we can of course also expect some prominent newcomers this time, as is traditional. A German theatrical release has not yet been confirmedbut September 21, 2023 would be quite possible (as is well known, films in this country start on Thursdays, not Fridays).
In addition to Stallone, Jason Statham (“Fast & Furious”, “The Transporter”) as Lee Christmas, Dolph Lundgren (“The Punisher”) as Gunner Jensen and wrestler Randy Couture as Toll Road are once again part of the party. Among the newcomers are “Transformersstar Megan Fox, Bad Boys For Life villain Jacob Scipio, martial arts ace Tony Jaa (Fast & Furious 7, Ong-Bak), and Hollywood legend Andy Garcia and rapper 50 Cent where Stallone also shot the “Escape Plan” films. “The Raid” main actor Iko Uwais slips into the role of the villain.
After Stallone (“The Expendables”), Simon West (“The Expendables 2”) and Patrick Hughes (“The Expendables 3”), there is also a new director change in the house, as Scott Waugh is directing “The Expendables 4”. He once celebrated his breakthrough with his authentic Navy SEAL action film “Act Of Valor” and also took part in the video game adaptation “Need For Speed” with “Breaking Bad’ star Aaron Paul in the director’s seat.
Concrete details of the content have so far been kept under wraps, but there is already initial information about “The Expendables 4” plot. Iko Uwais is supposed to slip into the role of a former military officer who is now getting into the gun business – and making life really difficult for the mercenaries around Barney Ross. That’s what these candid shots from the shoot, in which Uwais takes on Jason Statham, also suggests.
Franchise veteran Lundgren has already promised that the series will reach a whole new dimension with “The Expendables 4”:
By the way, you can currently even get the first three films as a streaming subscription:
» Stream “The Expendables”: Part 1 & Part 2 at WOW* / Part 3 on Netflix
However, the three films do not have the same streaming home, at least not currently – so you need two subscriptions for this at the moment. The first two parts are on the WOW (formerly Sky Ticket) platform, while Netflix hosts the third and last film so far. However, we wouldn’t be surprised if all previous parts landed on one and the same platform by the time that part 4 hit theaters at the latest.
