That’s it, the latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has just been released in theaters. The opportunity to decipher the post-credits sequences of the film. And this time, there is heavy! Focus on the first scene. CAUTION SPOILERS !!!
The Eternals : new MCU proposal
Directed by Chloé Zhao, The Eternals is the 26th Marvel Cinematic Universe movie. The opportunity to present a whole new team to the general public: the Eternals. These, created by the Celestials, roam the Earth for millennia. Their one and only mission is to protect human beings against Deviants, an extremely violent alien race.
The Eternals, this is clearly the new family of the MCU. A dysfunctional family that presents a multitude of new characters. Thus, Gemma Chan is Sersi, Richard Madden is Ikaris, Salma Hayek plays Ajak, Angelina Jolie plays Thena, Barry Keoghan plays Druig, Kumail Nanjiani plays Kingo, Brian Tyree Henry is Phastos, Ma Dong-seok plays Gilgamesh, Lauren Ridloff is Makkari and Lia McHugh is Sprite. One hell of a team that’s doomed to return to the MCU.
Of course, like any self-respecting Marvel Studios film, The Eternals is composed of two post-credits scenes. And while sometimes these don’t help much and are just easy to forget humor, here, the two sequences in question are important. Obviously, this article is for those who have already seen the film. Here is the decryption of the first post-credits scene which introduces two new characters. CAUTION SPOILERS!
Who is Pip the Troll?
The first post-credits sequence introduces two new characters to the MCU. The scene in question takes place in the ship of the Eternals, as Thena, Makkari and Druig decided to leave Earth to help out in new galaxies. That’s when two new characters come to meet them. It doesn’t take long for comic book readers to recognize these two protagonists. They are Pip the Troll and Starfox.
First Pip the Troll. This last, created in 1975 by Jim Starlin, is a recurring character in La Maison des Idées’ cosmic crossovers. Inexhaustible comic spring, Pip the Troll usually appears with Adam Warlock, which he serves blindly. Once Prince Gofern of the planet Laxidazia, Pip is unlike his compatriots. He is physically and mentally different and off-putting. His ability to teleport makes Pip the perfect servant. And if he spends the majority of his time with Adam Warlock, he has indeed had a few adventures with Starfox. Its presence is not trivial. Especially since Marvel Studios just announced that Will Poulter was going to be the face of Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The two characters are therefore doomed to meet.
Who is Starfox?
The other character in this sequence so is Starfox. This last, his real name Eros, is, as explained in The Eternals, thanos brother. He indeed indicates it in this post-generic sequence.. From the planet Titan, he is the son of Mentor, and therefore the brother of the terrible Thanos. Unlike the Eternals presented in Chloé Zhao’s film, Eros is not a creation of the Celestials, but is part of the original Eternals. He is incidentally, in the comics, the cousin of Thena, played by Angelina Jolie.
Created by Jim Starlin and Mike Friedrich in 1973, Eros is the complete opposite of Thanos. While the latter has the Deviant gene, which explains his repulsive purple physical appearance, Eros is the representation of seduction par excellence. He has the ability to heal all wounds, has a unique aura of persuasion, understands over 500 alien languages, and possesses the same attributes as the Eternals: super strength, super speed, and immortality. Necessarily, Eros ‘beauty and incredible faculties spawned jealousy and hatred in Thanos’ heart.
Eros, an egocentric character at best, decided to embark on a superheroic career, and took the pseudonym of Starfox. In the MCU, the latter will therefore have the face of Harry Styles, the leader of the group One Direction, who is revealed in the costume of the character. In any case, the presence of these two protagonists should have some consequences for the rest of the MCU. Indeed, these two heroes are closely related to the Eternals therefore, but also to Adam Warlock and the Guardians of the Galaxy. All this little world should logically soon cross in the MCU, possibly …
