In theaters since Wednesday, The Eternals introduced very different new Marvel heroes, including Kingo played by Kumail Nanjiani, an actor accustomed to comedies that the director did not hesitate to ask to write her comic lines.
Everyone has their own specialties! Interviewed by The AV Club, the director of The Eternals, Chloe Zhao, confided to have relied a lot on Kumail Nanjiani to measure the humor of her character, the superhero Kingo. The latter is part of a group of extraterrestrials protecting the Earth from monstrous Deviants since the dawn of humanity.
Before tackling this epic, the filmmaker had signed only independent dramas, including Nomadland which won her the Oscar for Best Director at the beginning of the year. The Eternals thus marks his first steps in action but also comedy, a genre that does not come naturally to him.
“It’s very important to make the audience laugh but I find it easier to make the audience cry than to make them laugh”, Explains Chloé Zhao before declaring:“I take my hat off to Kumail for helping me with this.”
The interpreter of Kingo is indeed a pro of humor who made himself known thanks to his roles in comedies, in particular the series Silicon Valley.
Humor but not only …
“I relied on Kumail a lot to come up with some of these ideas”, Continues the director who does not see besides that in the Eternal one a comic character.
“Kingo is a very complex character. Yes, he’s funny and he’s always the person who likes to make the situation comfortable, but when you think about it he has some very strong beliefs and he’s not afraid to stick to them. He just does it a little different than Ikaris (Richard Madden)”, She assures.
We can find Kumail Nanjiani, who seems to have taken a liking to action, a genre he had not encountered before The Eternals, in another Disney production soon: the Star Wars series: Obi-Wan Kenobi .
