“The Eternals”, the latest from Marvel Studios, is currently in theaters. The opportunity for us to focus on one of the fractions of the film: the Deviants. Here’s everything you need to know about these Thanos race antagonists!
The Eternals : the MCU is back
The Eternals marks the 26th chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). After Black widow and Shang-Chi, and in the meantime Spider-Man: No Way Home, Chloe Zhao has been tasked by the firm to introduce a new team to the MCU : the Eternals. Led by Sersi and Ikaris, respectively embodied by Gemma Chan and Richard Madden, these ancestral beings have roamed the Earth for millennia. They have a function there, given by the Celestials: protect human beings against Deviants. But who are these Deviants?
Deviants: ancestral enemies of the Eternals
Created in 1976 by Jack Kirby, Deviants, like humans and the Eternals, are a branch of humanity. They are, like the Eternals, the result of an experimentation of the Celestials on Earth. This subspecies derived from humanity has a different genetic map from the other two branches of humanity. Considered the ugly duckling, they generally have a repulsive and monstrous physical appearance. Created by the Celestials to protect humanity, they quickly attempted to take control of Earth, using their powers to enslave human beings. It was the intervention of the Eternals that freed humans from the yoke of the Deviants. Since then, these two factions have been at perpetual war. There are approximately 2000 Deviants across the galaxy.
After being driven out by the Eternals, the Deviants took refuge in an enclave on the ocean floor, in the seabed. Their leader, the Grand Krapo, and his general of the armies, Kro, have done everything to restore their greatness to the Deviants. These, like the Eternals, are like gods. They are regularly mentioned in human legends. The Eternals posing as gods, and the Deviants as demons.
The Deviants and the Eternals intervened regularly during the great stages of humanity. For example, they could be at the origin of the creation of the Atlanteans, which would come from an experiment. Among the few famous Deviants, we can cite Gelt, Kro, Morjak, Brother Tode, Ahqlau, Broop, Ignatz, Karygmax or even Queen Vira.
The Thanos case
Even though comic book readers are well aware, the general public may not be aware that Thanos is an Eternal. Eh yes ! The Mad Titan is part of the family of Sersi, Ikaris, Gilgamesh, etc … Indeed, the Titans are a branch of the Eternals, and were also created by the Celestials. Thanos is also Thena’s cousin, the heroine played by Angelina Jolie in Chloé Zhao’s film.
He is the son of mentor Alars and Sui-san. Unlike his brother Eros, Thanos is born with an ungrateful physique, and is quickly rejected by his fellows. Indeed, the future Mad Titan is a carrier of Deviant syndrome. Each Deviant can develop powers according to their Mutant Deviant Syndrome. Most have increased life expectancy, remarkable strength, or high intelligence. So if Thanos was born to the Eternals, he was quickly affiliated with the Deviants, as a consequence of his physical and moral deviations. Even if it is not completely part of this category.
But the Mad Titan preferred to go solo to become the tyrant everyone knows, independently of the wanderings of the Eternals and the Deviants. It remains to be seen whether Marvel Studios will soon formalize the relationship between Thanos, Thena and the rest of the Eternals …
