Marvel’s “The Eternals” contains several references to superheroes… DC! Cheerful winks that Chloe Zhao came back to during the promotion of the film.
DC superheroes in the MCU (or almost)! In a scene from the Eternals, showing since November 3, Phastos’ son (Brian Tyree Henry) compares Ikaris (Richard Madden) to Superman, the most famous superhero in DC comics, who has been adapted many times for the screen. .
If this reference to Marvel’s eternal competitors will have escaped no one, another nod to the DC universe may have gone more unnoticed by those less knowledgeable: when Gilgamesh (Ma Dong-seok) meets Kingo’s valet ( Kumail Nanjiani), he calls him “Alfred”. A reference, of course, to Batman’s butler.
And against all odds, director and screenwriter Chloe Zhao had no trouble imposing these easter eggs on Kevin Feige, the boss of Marvel Studios. It was indeed she who had the idea of quoting the Man of Steel in the feature film.
TO Variety, she tells : “You write it down, you show it to Kevin, if he doesn’t say anything, it’s okay. I don’t think we had a conversation about it. Not really, other than he said ‘Oh, that’s cool’.”
Don’t believe, however, that The Eternals portend a future collaboration or clash between the heroes of the DCEU and those of the MCU. In the universe of Captain America and others, Superman is only a fictional character.
“Gilgamesh and Phastos enjoy certain aspects of human life, be it cooking, pop culture or movies. So they pick out the human things they love the most, aspects of us that are quite extraordinary. For Gilgamesh, he watches Batman. So when he sees someone’s valet he’s like ‘Ah, I know!’ Just because he loves Batman, like a lot of us.”, Explains Chloé Zhao.
And the one who has never hidden her geek side to conclude: “All the references that there are in this film, whether through words or visual things, are tributes. It is out of love and admiration for these characters.“We are therefore far from the rivalry, especially among fans, between the two behemoths that are Marvel and DC.
