A new Marvel movie is hitting theaters tomorrow: The Eternals. We take stock of everything you need to know before discovering the adventures of these new heroes!
What is it about ?
Since the dawn of humanity, the Eternals, a group of heroes from the far reaches of the universe, have been protecting the Earth. When the Deviants, monstrous creatures thought to be long gone, mysteriously reappear, the Eternals are once again forced to come together to defend humanity …
The film spans several millennia since it begins in ancient Mesopotamia, 7,000 BC, at the dawn of civilization, when the Eternals arrive on Earth for the first time. They are then found at several times, such as Babylon in 2500 BC or during the fall of the Aztec Empire in 1521 and then today.
By whom is it carried out?
Chinese director Chloe Zhao was recruited to direct The Eternals, which is none other than the 26th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She had so far made independent films, often performed by non-professional actors. His third feature film, Nomadland, won him the Oscar for Best Director earlier this year.
“I am entering this universe as a director, but also as a fan. Being able to make a standalone movie while celebrating those who came before us, developing mythology and shaping the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe was all an exciting challenge. It is an honor for me to take part in this adventureThis big MCU fan explains in the film’s production notes.
Who are the Eternals?
Created by the legendary Jack Kirby and first appeared in 1976 in the comic book Eternals, the Eternals are immortal aliens from the distant planet Olympia. This race of aliens arrived on Earth thousands of years ago to protect humanity from monstrous predators called Deviants.
The Eternals have been warned of the threat posed by the Deviants by the Celestials, a race of cosmic builders whom they obey.
Within the MCU, it is in Guardians of the Galaxy that we see the Celestials for the first time when the Collector (Benicio del Toro) explains the origin of the Infinity Stones. Peter Quill’s (Chris Pratt) father, Ego (Kurt Russell) who appears in Guardians of the Galaxy 2, is one of them.
Why hadn’t we seen them before?
Present on Earth since the dawn of humanity, the Eternals have never appeared in MCU films and have never helped the Avengers in their battles against Loki, Ultron or even Thanos. It is therefore legitimate to ask why.
They simply did not have the right since the Celestials had given them “the order not to intervene in human conflicts unless the Deviants are involved“, as explained in the trailer.
What are their powers?
The Eternals are ten in number and all have different powers. They are further divided into two groups: thinkers and fighters.
Performed by Gemma Chan, “Sersi is a thinker, and her cosmic energy manifests itself through the transmutation of matter: she is able to manipulate it and change one object into another. He is a dependable and caring person, who uses his mind and powers to help those in need.”, Can we read in the press kit.
Ajak, camped by Salma Hayek, is a thinker and spiritual guide of the Eternals. It is the only one that can communicate with the Celestials thanks to a golden sphere generated by the cosmic energy which pulses through it. She also has the power to heal her Eternal companions, as well as humans and animals.
Druig (Barry Keoghan) “is a thinker, and his cosmic energy allows him to control minds. He can use his power to influence his Eternal companions, and he has done so to control the minds of humans for over 7,000 years in times of conflict.”.
Played by Brian Tyree Henry, “Phastos is a thinker, to whom his cosmic energy empowers mankind to advance. Master inventor and technopath, he is one of the smartest people in the universe. (…) He has the capacity to understand machines, to build them and to communicate with them. He can combine different technologies to make whatever comes to his mind”.
Ikaris, camped by Richard Madden, “is a fighter. He has supreme power and strength …
