Pretty Woman: the end of the film could have been very different

Pretty Woman is a romantic comedy starring the couple Richard Geere/Julia Roberts. The end, now cult, could however have been different… and much less light! Explanations.

[Mis à jour le 28 novembre 2022 à 20h50] Released in 1990, Pretty Woman has imposed itself in thirty years as a classic of the romantic movie. The feature film directed by Garry Marshall is to be seen on M6 this Monday, November 28, 2022. But if the end is now cult and offers a happy ending to the characters embodied by Richard Gere and Julia Roberts, the film could have ended much differently. In effect, Pretty Woman was originally meant to end very dramatically: Edward and Vivian did not end together in the first version of the script, and Vivian’s future was uncertain.

The scenario of Pretty Woman (which was originally called 3,000), went through several modifications before filming. But it’s the undeniable chemistry between Julia Roberts and Richard Gere who made the two characters fall in love: “The chemistry between them was palpable on screen and during the auditions, remembers JF Lawton, the screenwriter, with Vanity Fair. We couldn’t imagine it could end otherwise, they would light up in each other’s presence.” After the scenario changes naturally imposed by the casting, Pretty Woman became one of the best American romantic comedies of the 1990s!

Synopsis – Edward Lewis (Richard Gere) is a businessman who made his fortune, thanks in particular to his associate Philip Stuckey (Jason Alexander). One evening, Edward meets a prostitute, Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts), which does not leave him indifferent. He will offer the young woman to hire him for a whole week, in return for substantial financial compensation. During this week, Vivian will understand that she no longer wants to prostitute herself, and Edward that money is not enough for happiness. All this is not to the taste of Philip who suddenly finds his partner less engaged in business, and who will do everything to separate the lovebirds.
