Naomi Ackie is Whitney Houston in “I Wanna Dance With Somebody”, the biopic about the famous singer. The film is unveiled with a first trailer.
Whitney Houston, an unforgettable artist
whitney houston was one of the most important singers of her generation. Revealed by the important producer Clive Davis, she will have been able to reach a wide audience. His career was obviously marked by his performance in the film Bodyguard with Kevin Costner, in which she plays a famous singer.
His life had already been told in excellent documentary Whitney by Kevin Macdonald (see our review), but we were still waiting a biopic worthy of the name to pay homage to him. It is now done with I Wanna Dance With Somebody by Kasi Lemmons. The film takes for its title one of the first successes of Whitney Houston. And it is with this song in the background that we discover the trailer of the feature film (in one article).
A classic trailer for I Wanna Dance With Somebody
As you can see in these pictures, I Wanna Dance With Somebody should be a fairly classic biopic looking back on the important moments of his career. His meeting with Clive Davis (played by Stanley Tucci, unrecognizable), his first successes but also the criticisms against him. Indeed, for some his music was “not dark enough”. The artist had notably been called Whitney “Whitey” Houston (the white Whitney Houston) by the Reverend Al Sharpton and boo at the Soul Train Awards in 1989.
For the moment, this trailer remains rather soft and does not show the darker part of Whitney Houston (with her husband Bobby Brown). Above all, we hope that the film will use the singer to say something about the America of the time and all its problems – which Kevin Macdonald’s documentary showed very well. Nevertheless Naomi Ackie’s performance, which embodies the artist, seems to be of good quality. We’ll see if the end result will be up to par. To make sure, go in theaters on December 21, 2022.
