When he’s not poaching popcorn fields, Fast & Furious 7 andAquaman 2″ director James Wan has made a name for himself as a horror expert: Among other things, he directed the first “Saw” part, the first two “Insidious” parts and the first two films in the “Conjuring” series, so he brought some of the most profitable film series on the way at all. It remains to be seen whether he also founded a franchise with “Malignant”. Because while the fan reactions were excellent, the theatrical box office was a disappointment.
With a budget of $40 million, the stylishly quirky horror film made just $34 million at the box office worldwide. A pity, because at least According to DashFUN, “Malignant” is no less than the best horror film of 2021. Now Warner is quietly raising hopes that the studio apparently thinks highly of the film: After the DVD and Blu-ray were released at the end of 2021, a 4K Blu-ray will be submitted on October 13th. While James Wan directed Malignant, the script was written by Akela Cooper, who has previously worked on series such as Grimm, American Horror Story and Marvel’s Luke Cage. She obviously made a big impression on Wan – because not only did he implement her script for “Malignant”, he also gave her the responsibility for the content of the second part of the “Conjuring” spin-off “The Nun” transfer. So she enjoys the complete trust of the horror mastermind.
Even if “Malignant” didn’t hit the cinemas like it deserved and not all film portals share the 4.5 star rating distributed by DashFUN: With stylish staging, a witty script and an incomparable twist, “Malignant” has all the ingredients to become one of those films that, years later, horror fans will ask themselves, “Why did it get so little attention back then?” This has already been shown in the past few months, in which the calls for a sequel have become louder and louder. And we are sure: They won’t get any quieter anytime soon!
The star of this genre fun is the killer, clad in a black leather coat and wearing long, stringy hair. Wan presents such a visually stunning package with the killer, and Cooper weaves such a memorable origin story for her villain that we are certain: “Malignant” is the “birth of a new cult killer”.!
It is also impressive, to quote briefly from our review, with what a “self-confident fervor” the cast, who put themselves fully at the service of this basic idea, treated the trashy-beautiful side of the giallo genre celebrates…
