The Batman is carried by a four-star cast, from Robert Pattinson to Jeffrey Wright, passing by Zoë Kravitz and Paul Dano, but do you know their first role on the screen?
Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, Colin Farrell, discover the stars of The Batman in their first screen appearance. From obscure TV series to acclaimed movies and even classics, review the DC Comics movie cast debut, hitting theaters March 2nd.
The Batman stars
Robert Pattinson (Batman)
Robert Pattinson started out on screen in a medieval TV movie called The Sacred Ring. He played the role of Giselher, the king’s brother, slightly imbued with his rank, opposite the real hero of the film, Benno Fürmann, since seen in the series Babylon Berlin. Before this Sacred Ring, his fans know that Pattinson had shot scenes for Vanity Fair, the fair for vanities (2004) but that they were all cut during the editing when the film was released in theaters. On the DVD of the film, however, we can see one of these scenes (warning, poor quality):
Zoe Kravitz (Catwoman)
Selina Kyle pulls out the clutches of Catwoman in the guise of Zoë Kravitz, who we could see in Big Little Lies or Fantastic Beasts 2. She made her screen debut in a feature film worn by Catherine Zeta-Jones and Aaron Eckhart: The Taste of Life (2007), as a jaded goth teenager.
Jeffrey Wright (James Gordon)
Not yet a commissioner, James Gordon is played by Jeffrey Wright, who was in the cast of the Marvel What If series after having played in Dying can wait and the Westworld series. He owes his first appearance to Presumed Innocent (1990), a trial thriller with Harrison Ford in which Wright is credited as “General Counsel”. We didn’t manage to find him in the film, maybe it’s this man we quickly meet during a panoramic shot? If you spotted it, don’t hesitate to give us the timecode and we’ll add it with pleasure!
Barry Keoghan (Stanley Merkel)
In the comics, Stanley Merkel is a policeman from Gotham who began his career with James Gordon. He appears for the first time in 1987 (Batman n°405) and will therefore be played by Barry Keoghan, recently seen in The Eternals at Marvel. His first role was in the Irish series Jack Taylor (2010), season 2, episode 2. He played a small strike opposite Iain Glen alias Jorah Mormont from Game of Thrones.
John Turturro (Carmine Falcone)
Beginnings and not the least, since John Turturro began his career in Raging Bull, a classic of the cinema in which Robert De Niro embodies the boxer, Jake LaMotta. John Turturro appears for a restaurant scene. In The Batman, he will play the mobster Carmine Falcone, well known to fans of comics, Batman Begins, Gotham, or Batman animated films.
Peter Sarsgaard (Gil Colson)
Created especially for the film, Gil Colson is a Gotham City district attorney. He will therefore be played by Peter Sarsgaard, seen most recently in the Dopesick series on Disney+, and who owes his first screen appearance to the New York special unit series (S06E06, 1995), in which he plays the boyfriend of the victim.
Colin Farrell (The Penguin)
Quite unrecognizable as the super-villain Penguin, Colin Farrell has transformed to the point that you might not even know he’s in The Batman! On the other hand, we recognize his rascal air in his first film, Frankie Starlight (1995), in which he disrupts a cinema session with his friends.
Paul Dano (The Riddler)
In the skin of Edward Nashton aka the Riddler, Paul Dano is one of the supervillains of the film. Rather accustomed to independent cinema, he joined this DC Comics blockbuster, his first foray into this universe. He took his first steps in front of the camera on the small screen, in the sitcom Le Petit Malin (S03E01, 1998). He played a young basketball player there.
Andy Serkis (Alfred Pennyworth)
The interpreter of Gollum, Caesar, and King Kong among others began his career in a British sitcom called The New Statesman (1989). Andy Serkis played journalist Peter Moran (here with the glasses). In The Batman, he will lend his face to Bruce Wayne’s loyal butler, Alfred.
