Fourteen years after “Kisses from Bruges”, Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell find themselves under the direction of Martin McDonagh in “The Banshees of Inisherin”. A drama about a friendship that degenerates, as revealed by a first trailer.
The Banshees of Inisherin : Irish reunion
In 2008, playwright Martin McDonagh (7 Psychopaths, 3 Billboards: The Billboards of Revenge) made his film debut with the fabulous Kisses from Bruges. Dark thriller and true tragedy, the film begins with the arrival of two killers, Ray (Colin Farrell) and Ken (Brendan Gleeson), in the small Belgian town with a bucolic atmosphere. While he is responsible for eliminating him following a serious mistake, the second saves the first, depressed and wanting to end his life because of the guilt he feels.
After coming to his aid in this drama where black humor and desperate tone evokes in particular the Coen brothers, Brendan Gleeson does not want to hear any more about Colin Farrell in The Banshees of Inisherin. In any case, this is what the trailer for the film reveals, which takes place in 1923 in a small Irish village, during the civil war.
While they were still chatting the night before, Colm (Brendan Gleeson) tells his old friend Pádraic (Colin Farrell) that he doesn’t “like him anymore.” Lost, the second tries to find out more but the first is categorical: if Pádraic continues to talk to him, he will cut his fingers one after the other. Alongside the actors, Kerry Condon lends her features to Siobhán (3 Billboards: The Billboards of the revenge), Pádraic’s sister, while Barry Keoghan (The Eternals, The Batman) plays Dominic, the son of a policeman responsible for mediating between the two main characters.
“A Breakup Story”
I wanted this film to be as beautiful as possible. For the pleasure of beauty and cinema. And because when you’re told a story of two men bickering, if you don’t have some epic beauty to compensate for, it might tire you out. I’ve seen a lot of British and Irish films where the cinema didn’t seem to have been the primary reason for making them…
The filmmaker adds that “this story of rupture” obviously echoes the context of civil war in which it is played, recalling how “things can get worse and worseinexorably, from a very simple starting point”. About the reunion between Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, he assures that they should please fans of Kisses from Bruges :
For them, it’s a much harder playing field, because they love each other in life, as people, but as actors, they have to not let that show. I wanted to tell something that the public of Brugge could appreciate, but which would at the same time be a little weirder, completely different.
The Banshees of Inisherin was selected at the Venice Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival. The feature film is to discover on December 28, 2022 at the cinema. In the meantime, find the trailer at the top of the article.
