The 41st Istanbul Film Festival started with the opening ceremony held at the Cemal Reşit Rey Concert Hall on Thursday, April 7th.

Organized with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the 41st Istanbul Film Festival started with the opening ceremony held at the Cemal Reşit Rey Concert Hall on Thursday, April 7th. Many guests from Turkey and abroad, especially the crews of the films to be screened at the festival, attended the ceremony.
At the opening ceremony of the 41st Istanbul Film Festival, hosted by Cem Davran, in addition to the festival’s cinema honor awards, plaques of appreciation were presented to institutions and organizations that contributed to the realization of the festival.
A plaque of appreciation was presented to the General Directorate of Cinema of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, which made a great contribution to the festival, by Görgün Taner, General Manager of İKSV.
Thank you plaques were presented to the theme sponsors Anadolu Efes, Zorlu Holding, and Paribu, who contributed greatly to the festival, and Zurich Sigorta, the special screening sponsor of the festival’s Turkish Classics from Past to Present. At the ceremony, İKSV Founding Sponsor Eczacıbaşı Group and all institutions and organizations that supported the festival were thanked.
The Excitement of Competition at the Festival Starts on April 8
At the ceremony, the competitions of the festival and the members of the jury were introduced. 57 films compete in the 41st Istanbul Film Festival under five titles: International and National Competition, Young Masters, National Documentary, and National Short Film Competition. The screenings of the competition films begin on the first day of the festival, on 8 April.
41st Istanbul Film Festival Cinema Honorary Awards
The first Cinema Honorary Award of the 41st Istanbul Film Festival was presented to Gülsen Tuncer, a versatile name who has made great contributions to our art world with her works in different disciplines such as behind-the-scenes and teaching as well as acting. Gülsen Tuncer’s award was presented by director Engin Ayça.
The second Cinema Honorary Award of the festival was presented to the esteemed actress Meral Çetinkaya, who started her career in theater and successfully continued in cinema and television. Actress Güler Ökten presented her award to Meral Çetinkaya.
Festival Opens With Rabiye Kurnaz Against George W. Bush
After the ceremony, Rabiye Kurnaz Against George W. Bush directed by Andreas Dresen was screened. The film, which made its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival in February 2022 and won the Art Cinemas Association Award for the Best Screenplay, also brought the Best Performance Award to Meltem Kaptan for her role as Rabiye. The film’s director Andreas Dresen, Meltem Kaptan, the protagonists of the film Rabiye Kurnaz and her lawyer Bernhard Docke also attended the ceremony and presented the film.
Cinema Festival Begins
A total of 157 films by 164 directors from 43 countries, from the newest examples of world cinema to cult works, from the latest films of master directors to new discoveries, classics, and hidden treasures, will be screened at the 41st Istanbul Film Festival between 8-19 April. Festival screenings will be held in 7 halls: Atlas 1948 in Beyoğlu, Beyoğlu Cinema, Pera Museum Auditorium, CineWAM Premium+ City’s (Hall 3 and Hall 7) in Nişantaşı, Kadıköy Cinema, and Kadıköy Municipality Cinematheque/Cinema House. International guests of the festival will have a cinema feast in Istanbul for 12 days with talks, concerts, and special events.
