It is one of the longest-lived film series ever, which has had its own fascination for its audience since 1968 – and is now finally available in its entirety on Disney+: “Planet of the Apes”.



Franklin J. Schaffner’s “Planet of the Apes” is one the Science fiction classic par excellence – groundbreaking, often quoted and copied even more often. And there is no shortage of sequels, new editions and further developments of the material. In the cinema alone, “Planet of the Apes” was continued with a total of eight films. Most of them have been available on Disney + for a long time, now the ninth, last missing chapter has finally followed.
Escape from the Planet of the Apes is available now with Disney+ subscriptions. So who might only be interested in the current trilogy consisting of “Planet of the Apes: Prevolution”, “Planet of the Apes: Revolution” and “Planet of the Apes: Survival”, which for us is one of the best blockbuster series of the recent past has acquired a taste for it, you can now easily catch up on all of its predecessors with one and the same streaming subscription.

Incidentally, the author of this article finished the “monkey” saga a few months ago in a binge marathon and was very happy with it – both with the phenomenal first part and with the sequels and new infusions by masterfully until Guilty Pleasure are sufficient. Regarding “Escape from the Planet of the Apes”, however, one has to honestly say that it is one of the weaker contributions to the science fiction series. At least when it comes to the official DashFUN review…
“Escape from the Planet of the Apes”: It’s best not to take it too seriously
Director Don Taylor (“The Omen II”) staged the second sequel to the milestone in 1971 with “Escape from the Planet of the Apes” just three years after the original – in which the monkey scientists Dr. Cornelius (Roddy McDowall), Dr. Zira (Kim Hunter) and Milo (Sal Mineo) are forced to flee their doomed homeland. With a lot of luck, they manage to get the spaceship of Taylor, who once made an emergency landing here, going and embark on a journey into the unknown – until one day they land on a strange planet that somehow seems familiar to them. It’s just that it’s not the monkeys who are in charge here, but the people…
“Please don’t take this film too seriously,” writes René Malgo in the official DashFUN review for “Escape from the Planet of the Apes”, for which there were only a meager 2 out of 5 stars in the end. While you are “still reasonably entertained on a moderate television level”, the weaknesses of “Planet of the Apes 3” are simply too serious. Among other things, our criticism says: “The story offers far too little to entertain over the full distance and is also and especially within the ‘Planet of the Apes’ universe hopelessly unbelievable.” And as it happens when a film gets boring, you have plenty of time to bother yourself with the logic gaps…
