Benoît Magimel is among the most talented and in demand actors of his generation. In the casting of great films which marked the history of cinema, as with the poster of certain forgettable productions, he had successes and failures, and also refused certain great roles. Review of these missed appointments.
Benoît Magimel is back
Currently showing Lovers by Nicole Garcia and In his lifetime by Emmanuelle Bercot, Benoît Magimel signs a thunderous comeback on the big screen. At 47, the prolific actor already has a monumental filmography to his credit. A long list of prestigious films shot with great directors. He has also been rewarded several times for his work. Since 1988 and his first steps in the cinema in the skin of Momo in Life is a long quiet river, Benoît Magimel is therefore part, above all for the better, of the French cinematographic landscape. And like all those who work long and hard, he has his share of failures and also of missed appointments.
Tintin ? Too many puffs
It is by definition THE phantom project. To realize the difficulty of portraying the adventures of the famous reporter invented by Hergé, we can come back to the fact that Steven Spielberg began in 1983 to adapt these stories, as he told it in an interview given in 1984. Then begins a long series of complicated back and forth between the different parts. But nothing will be done before 2009 and finally the production of The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn. Among many complexities, the rigidity of the beneficiaries – the heirs of Hergé and his work – comes first. What moreover cooled Jean-Pierre Jeunet to develop a project. He told it thus during an interview given to Release in 2002.
The locking of the heirs of Hergé makes everything too complicated, I met them and I understood that they were going to break my feet.
Is it in this aborted project by Jean-Pierre Jeunet that Benoît Magimel had to find his role of Tintin ? It is quite probable. Born in 1974, the actor had the age and allure of the late 90s, and even later, to play the Belgian reporter. But as he recently told the newspaper The world, Benoît Magimel was not interested in the project, fearing “that the tassel sticks to his skin”. A missed date, but as Tintin projects have a strong tendency to go unnoticed, was there even a real date?
Taxi ? Benoît Magimel is faithful in friendship
In 1998, Taxi by Gérard Pirès is a huge popular success and reveals Samy Naceri in the role of Daniel, a Marseille taxi driver like no other, with a super-vitamin white 406. “Recruited” by Emilien (Frédéric Diefenthal), a police officer in charge of solving a series of robberies, he will put his talents as a racing driver at his service. For the duo, other pairs had been considered, including Patrick Bruel and Vincent Perez, Yvan Attal and Olivier Martinez. But also Benoît Magimel. Problem, it then has another commitment. He is of a lesser caliber, but that he would not give up for the world, the film A minute of silence by Florent-Emilio Siri.
Released in 1998, A minute of silence is the first of the director’s six films and Benoît Magimel appears in four of those, not to mention that he is also part of Marseilles, the Netflix series by Florent-Emilio Siri. Of the two men, we particularly remember the excellent Wasps nest released in 2002, which Benoît Magimel also shares the poster with … Samy Naceri. Benoît Magimel therefore refused Taxi, major project, out of friendship and loyalty to Florent Emilio-Siri in order to appear in his first film. This is called the class.
Mesrine? The actor is not seen in the role
The films we know, The death instinct and Public Enemy n ° 1, directed by Jean-François Richet and worn by Vincent Cassel, are originally a project by Barbet Schroeder, with Vincent Cassel already in the title role. In this project, Benoît Magimel was to play François Besse, Jacques Mesrine’s lieutenant. But Cassel withdraws, and the role is therefore offered to him. If he wants to, to interpret the famous gangster nevertheless seems impossible to him, and it therefore declines, as he explained in 2005 to Widescreen.
After Vincent Cassel’s withdrawal, they came to see me and my first answer was negative, because I really saw a ravine between me and the character, me 30 years old, and Mesrine 43 when he died. The director assured that we would do our Mesrine, with me and my physique. In my opinion, Mesrine’s physique is essential, he was a force of nature ….
