“Dream Of A Thousand Cast / Calliope” aka “The Dream Of A Thousand Cats / Calliope” is the eleventh episode of The Sandman, available to stream on Netflix today. Including the credits, it lasts a whopping 64 minutes, making it the longest episode of the first season of the series.
Then two stories are told at the same time, as the title makes clear. They are both stories from the third volume of The Sandman, entitled Dreamland: The Dream of a Thousand Cats and Calliope.

The episode thus begins with an animated story. In The Dream of a Thousand Cats, a cat imagines a dark, apocalyptic world inhabited by giant cats. The episode also stars The Sadman creator Neil Gaiman, Sandra Oh, and David Tennant and Michael Sheen, who previously starred in Gaiman’s Good Omens series. With a length of around 16 minutes, this story is the introduction to the bonus episode.
The bulk of the bonus episode, however, is the story “Kalliope”. The companion from “Doctor WhoThe well-known Arthur Darvill plays an author who keeps the muse Calliope (Melissanthi Mahut), known from Greek mythology, as a prisoner like a slave. Seeking help, she turns to her old great love: Morpheus aka Dream (Tom Sturridge).
The bonus episode of “The Sandman” helps perfectly to shorten the waiting time for a possible second season and to build a bridge to it. Because as I said, the two stories belong to the third volume of the “The Sandman” series by Neil Gaiman. So far, fans have wondered how this is adapted. Because “Dreamland” is a collection of short stories that are not directly connected to the main plot. With the bonus episode, a way was found to refer to this third volume as well, instead of just skipping over it.
IIn a possible second season, however, the adaptation of the fourth volume should continue. We have already written down what you can expect there in this article:
