Superman Man of Steel 2: still hope for Henry Cavill? DC responds

Is seeing Superman on the big screen still possible? Is Henry Cavill definitely ousted? James Gunn reacts.

Considered by many to be one of the only (if not THE only) good DCU films, man of steel was to have the right to a long-awaited sequel and the latter was above all to mark the great return of Henry Cavill as Superman. Unfortunately, as we reported to you recently, all hopes seemed to have suddenly disappeared since the arrival of James Gunn and Peter Safran at the head of the DCU, although the actor had announced that he was leaving the series. The Witcher to resume the cape of the indestructible superhero.
However, Cavill should have had a much more important place and a gigantic film at the Avengers was even planned. But during a recent tribute to the superhero, James Gunn, now the head of the DCU, spoke about the sequel for Superman and was reassuring. Can we still have hope?

Superman, a top priority for Gunn

It’s the HollywoodReporter which brings us once again the information according to which James Gunn would have reassured the fans concerning the treatment of the emblematic superhero of DC. As he celebrated the anniversary of Richard Donner’s Superman (1978), which celebrated its 44th birthday this weekend, fans grabbed onto the director to ask him a bunch of questions to which he gave some answers .

After brushing aside all hope of a teaser, fans asked Gunn if he was planning a Superman return to the big screen, to which the Guardians of the Galaxy 3 director answered a resounding yes.

Yes of course. Superman is a huge priority, if not the biggest priority

More than ever, Superman is at the heart of all attention at DC, and that’s good. But then, what about Man of Steel 2 and Henry Cavill? If James Gunn does not give any clues here about the long-awaited sequel, he nevertheless calms the ardor of some hardcore fans who attacked him by saying that he simply did not like Henry Cavill’s Superman, nor the actor himself.
To these critics, James Gunn replied a simple “Of course: it’s wrong”. He will also lose his temper somewhat when some fans become insistent on the subject by evoking rumors and unverified “hear-says”.

If the solo film which was to sign the great return of Henry Cavill in Superman is, for the moment, well at a standstill, nothing is visibly definitive. James Gunn has nothing against Cavill, he does not affirm his return, but does not say no to the actor. The worries are elsewhere, and we will have answers only much later. For his part, on his social networks, Cavill said he was very enthusiastic about the idea of seeing James Gunn land at DC and very excited about the sequel. What is certain, however, is that the arrival of Gunn and Safran at the head of the DCU had the effect of a real bomb.

What’s next for the DCU?

Most of the ongoing projects would have skipped or are at least put on standby like Wonder Woman 3 with Gal Gadot or Aquaman 2 with Jason Momoa, who would be cast for another major role. Without speaking about Batman Beyondthe film which was to mark the return of Michael Keaton here.
Man of Steel 2 also is stalled at the moment. However, still according to Hollywood Reporter, screenwriter Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) had pored over the project and reportedly wrote a good chunk of the script before he was asked to put his hands up. Cavill’s return was therefore assured before the arrival of Gunn and Safran.
Moreover, still according to the HollywoodReporter, ex-DCU boss Walter Hamada was also working on a long-term plan to reinstate Henry Cavill. Many cameos had to be put in place in the films of the universe before a huge film at the Avengersinspired by the mini-series Crisis on Infinite Earth, does not come to put Superman on the front of the stage.

So many films put aside to give James Gunn and Peter Safran time to sort out. The latter now have the heavy task of writing the rest of the DC universe in the cinema to try to catch up with the Marvel machine which already has a considerable lead. The objective here is clear, to reinstall DC for decades in the cinema, it now remains to be seen if this quasi reboot of the universe manages to pull out of the game. For the time being, therefore, we can only theorize and take the snippets of information that falls here and there. James Gunn had also reacted to the first reports of the Hollywood Report by affirming that part of what the journalists had noted was true, while other assertions were false or had not yet been decided. The director also called on fans to be patient.

As for the Hollywood Reporter article, some of it is true, some of it is half true, some of it isn’t true, and some of it hasn’t been decided yet.
While this first month in DC has been fruitful, building the next ten years of history takes time and we are only at the beginning. We know we’re not going to make everyone happy, but we can promise that everything we do is in the service of STORY and in service of the DC CHARACTERS you cherish and have cherished all our lives.
As for answers regarding the future of the DCU, I sadly have to ask you to wait. We’re giving these characters and stories the time and attention they deserve, and we still have a lot of questions ourselves.
