Nintendo struck a big blow during its Nintendo Direct from September 24 at midnight. In addition to a release date, the Kyoto firm has announced a 5-star voice cast for the animated film based on the Super Mario universe.
“It’s me! Mario!” For 3 years, Nintendo and Illumination (Despicable Me) have been working together on a Super Mario Bros. animated film, giving very little information on the progress of the project. On September 24, at midnight, the Japanese company created a surprise with heavy, very, very heavy: a release date and a high-level vocal cast!
During a Nintendo Direct, online event intended to evoke future games on the Switch console, Shigeru Miyamoto appeared wearing a Mario t-shirt of the most beautiful effect. The daddy of the mustached plumber and the Zelda saga has announced that the feature will land in theaters for the end of the year 2022 holidays.
It will notably be released on December 21, 2022 in the United States. Dates for Japan and the rest of the world, including Europe, will be communicated at a later date. Note that the title of the feature film has been shortened. It will be called “Mario”, quite simply.
Miyamoto-san, very involved in the project, then revealed himself the actors who will lend their voices to the characters of the Mushroom Kingdom. Chris Pratt, aka Star Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy, will voice Mario. He will be accompanied by Anya Taylor-Joy (The Lady’s Game), who will play Princess Peach. As for Luigi, brother of Nintendo’s mascot, he will be played by Charlie Day (Philadelphia).
Another character well known to fans of the Kyoto firm will be present: Donkey Kong! He will be played by Seth Rogen. Of course, Mario will have to face his nemesis, Bowser. The iconic villain of the saga will be played by Jack Black. Finally, actor and comedian Keegan-Michael Key will lend his stamp to Toad, humanoid mushroom, servant and protector of Princess Peach. Shigeru Miyamoto also revealed that Charles Martinet, historic voice of Super Mario in games, will be part of the feature film. “He will make unexpected appearances”, promises Miyamoto.
10 video games coming to theaters soon: Uncharted, Super Mario, Metal Gear …
“The film is the result of a fruitful collaboration between Illumination and Nintendo. I can tell you that ideas have flowed from all sides. I really enjoyed discovering a creative process a little different from that of the games”, concluded Mario’s dad.
Will this animated film make people forget the disastrous live action feature film of 1993? See you at Christmas 2022 to find out!
