In his memoir which has just been published, the veteran actor Brian Cox, currently headlining the excellent series “Succession”, indulged in a few confidences with a pen slightly dipped in acid…
We hardly present the great British actor Brian Cox, who walks his figure on the small and big screen in a career that began in the cinema in 1971. Headliner of the excellent HBO series Succession, broadcast on OCS, for which he has moreover won a Golden Globe for Best Actor in 2019, he has just published his memoirs, Putting The Rabbit in The Hat.
In an interview with GQ around the subject, the actor reveals that he refused a role in the Game of Thrones series, and also refused to play in the Pirates of the Caribbean saga, with a Johnny Depp he finds “overrated” and in the game “bloated”…
“I’ve often been asked if I’ve been offered a role in Game of Thrones, and the answer is yes. I was supposed to play a king called Robert Baratheon, who apparently dies on a hunting trip, killed by a boar in the first season”.
A role that will ultimately be held by his compatriot Mark Addy. “I know very little about ‘Game of Thrones’, so I can’t tell you if he was an important character or not, and I’m also not going to google to find out, just in case, because I turned down the role he writes.
Why this refusal? “Game of Thrones was a huge success, and everyone involved in it made a fortune” he continues. “But when they originally offered the role, the amount offered was not that much, shall we say. Besides, I had to die quite early, so I wouldn’t have had any of the benefits of the long-term effects of it. ‘a hit show where your salary goes up with each passing season’.
Pirates of the Caribbean ? A Johnny Depp with a bloated game
Brian Cox also reveals he declined the Governor’s role in the franchise Pirates of the Caribbean, which will ultimately be held by Jonathan Pryce. The role “would have been a source of income, but of all those in the film, it was the most thankless, and moreover I would have found myself doing film after film, missing all the beautiful things I did”.
Another reason for his refusal: the actor Johnny Depp. With this tackle in the throat: “another thing about Pirates of the Caribbean is that it’s a Johnny Depp show as Jack Sparrow”; and Depp, while I’m sure he’s likable, is so overrated and bloated. I mean, take Edward Scissorhands. If you show up with hands like that and scary makeup, you don’t have to do anything. And that’s the case. And then he did even less. But people love him. Or they loved him. Lately, they don’t like him so much.”
With such considerations, not sure to find the two actors together in a next film…
