Fans talked about this scene the most on social media.
Stranger ThingsIn the most talked about scene in the season 4 finale of ‘Eddie, he grabs his guitar and plays Metallica’s “Master of Puppets”, giving the most interesting metal concert ever. As he plays his guitar, the bats surrounding Vecna’s lair recede, leaving Steve (Joe Keery), Nancy (Natalia Dyer) and Robin (Maya Hawke) to attack the demon.
Metallica frontman James Hetfield said that the song, released from Metallica’s 1986 album of the same name and considered one of the band’s all-time classics, is mainly about drugs and how addiction controls people, but the lyrics can be perceived as many things. An epic 8:35 greets the audience and ranges from overwhelming riffs to a progressive rock midsection.
The show’s music supervisor, Nora Felder, explains that executive producers Matt and Ross Duffer dressed the song for the script during pre-production. Felder said, “This was another one of those must-have songs. This part of the story was expected to be a crucial and particularly grisly scene in which Eddie heroically stands up for the battle of his life. I believe the Duffer Brothers thought it was the obvious choice to be ‘Master of Puppets’ throughout the extended scene. No other song was discussed further and we immediately worked for it.”
Felder adds that there are similarities between Vecna and the drugs referenced in the song “Master of Puppets.” The aggressive up-tempo metal sound belies the stimulating psychologically and socially conscious lyrics based on a sensitive concern for others. That’s the sensitive side we see in Eddie, evident in the scene where he meets Chrissy.”
