In Hawkins, Nancy (Natalia Dyer), Steve (Joe Keery), Robin (Maya Hawke), Max (Sadie Sink), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), and Eddie (Joseph Quinn) learn about Vecna’s plan, the small town to destroy. For this, the bully, who turned out to be Eleven’s predecessor One (Jamie Campbell Bower), has to open four gates to the upside-down (called “Schattenwelt” or “other side” in the German synchro). He already has three of them from his previous murders, he’s only missing one.
Max agrees to play decoy and keep him busy in the dream world so Steve, Robin and Nancy can destroy Vecna’s vulnerable real body in the shadow world. Meanwhile, Eddie and Dustin are tasked with distracting the Demobats guarding him while Lucas monitors Max to bring them back to the real world with their favorite song, “Running Up That Hill.”
Meanwhile, after escaping the research facility under attack from the US military, Eleven (played by Millie Bobby Brown) joins Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Will (Noah Schnapp), Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) and and Argylle (Eduardo Franco) to help the Hawkins group fight Vecna. Due to the spatial distance, this is only possible via telepathy and so Eleven faces the main villain in the dream plane.
Meanwhile, the Russia group, consisting of Hopper (David Harbour), Joyce (Winona Ryder), Murray (Brett Gelman) and Dmitri (Tom Wlaschiha), goes back to the prison to kill the Demogorgons and Demodogs there, who are connected via swarm intelligence connected to the Upside Down to weaken Vecna.
All of these plans mostly work out, but there are a few deaths to mourn and the danger from the shadow world only gets worse afterwards…
In the finale of “Stranger ThingsSeason 4 gets it first, namely in episode 8, dr burner (Matthew Modine), who is shot dead by a military sniper while trying to escape the lab with El. The next victim is Eddie, who takes heart and shows great heroism as he takes on a swarm of Demobats alone to buy the others more time. He suffers so many injuries that he ends up dying in Dustin’s arms.
As Vecna is able to put his plan into action and open a fourth gate to the upside-down, a much larger portal is created. A huge rift opens up in Hawkins, tearing apart everything in his path. It also gets caught jason (Mason Dye), who previously got into a fight with Lucas. In addition, the news then reports from at least 21 more fatalities in Hawkinswho lost their lives in the alleged earthquake.
However, there is one more character who dies, yet with Max the situation is a bit more complicated…
Yes, Max died. Eleven failed to keep Vecna away from her and had to watch as he killed her. Lucas also witnessed in the real world how Max’s bones broke and blood ran from her eyes. However, she was not dead immediately. Since Eleven interrupted the process, she was blind and without feeling in her body, but briefly alive. She doesn’t want to die, she told Lucas as he held her, devastated, in his arms. But then her life ended. Her death created the fourth portal, which ultimately plunged all of Hawkins into chaos.
But not so fast! Eleven didn’t see losing Max at all. With the belief that she could be saved, she laid her hand on the dream plane again and lo and behold: Obviously, Eleven has the ability to heal. Because two days later we see Max in the hospital. She’s in a coma and no one knows if she’ll ever wake up, but she’s alive! A miracle for the doctors, after all, she had been dead for a full minute.
So Eleven saved Max’s life. But the condition of the young Kate Bush supporter is devastating. Not only is she in a coma, but her arms and legs have been severely broken. It is also to be feared that she (if she ever wakes up again) is permanently blind. Eventually, her eyes were also badly damaged.
We think we’ll see Max again in Season 5 and she’ll definitely come out of her coma too. Otherwise, the writers might as well have let her die. But she may have to live with blindness.
Already in part 1 of season 4 it became clear that Vecna is not a being from the upside down or the other side, but it is Henry Creel, the son of convicted murderer Victor Creel (Robert Englund). Henry was gifted with supernatural gifts and a psychopathic disposition at an early age and killed his mother and daughter, while the father ended up in prison for the crime, innocently. Later Dr. Brenner picked him up, named him One, and performed experiments on him like he did with Eleven. However, following a confrontation with El, she pushed him through a Shadow World portal, where he was horribly disfigured by multiple lightning bolts.
There he saw Demogorgons for the first time. The monsters were not created by Vecna, but have always lived in the parallel dimension. However, he also discovered a strange swarm of black particles with strange properties, which he brought under his control.
Vecna created the Mind Flayer from the strange black substance and has been responsible for the horrifying events in Hawkins since at least Season 2.
Vecna would have to take a beating, but survived. He received two Molotov cocktails from Steve and Robin and several shotgun shots from Nancy, then fell out the window and disappeared. It wasn’t clear at first if he escaped or actually burned to death, but it’s Will who dashed any hope of an end to the nightmare. Because the Mind Flayer’s former host is still connected to the Upside-Down and senses that Vecna is still alive. So the fight is far from over for the Hawkins youth.
Season 4 ends with it suddenly starting to snow. At least that’s what the ignorant citizens of Hawkins think. But of course this is the dust from the upside-down, which actually shouldn’t exist in the normal world. When Eleven and Co. get closer to the origin of it, i.e. the huge portal in Hawkins, they have to watch how the landscape around it changes. So Vecna actually brought the upside down to Hawkins.
What happens now can only be speculated, but it seems easy to imagine that the monsters will now flow out of the portal from the other side. Normality is not to be thought of so quickly and in addition to El, Will should also play a major role. After all, he has a connection to Vecna that could not be used before.
Whatever happens, it already seems certain that showrunners Matt and Ross Duffer will be ready for the big “Stranger Things“Fine (season 5 of the Netflix hit is supposed to be the last) will act on a completely different scale. At least that gives the starting position with the giant portal.
