Benedict Cumberbatch is famous for his versatility. The trailer for The Wondrous World of Louis Wain gives the impression that the title role was tailor-made for the charming Brit. This is a biopic.
“The Wondrous World of Louis Wain” takes place in London at the end of the 19th century and tells the story of a great illustrator: Louis (Benedict Cumberbatch) grows up with his mother and five younger sisters. He developed into a loner, eccentric draftsman, and painter who desperately tried early on to support his family with his art. Then he finally gets a job through the publisher Ingram (Toby Jones), who is particularly fascinated by Louis’ cat pictures.
Wain becomes famous and everything seems to be going well. But then his eldest sister Caroline (Andrea Riseborough), with whom he has a particularly close relationship, falls seriously ill. Louis hires the governess Emily Richardsen (Claire Foy) as his nurse. Despite a significant class difference and social misgivings of his relatives, the two fall in love. But that’s by no means the biggest problem that awaits the nervous young man in the foreseeable future…
“The Wondrous World of Louis Wain” will be released in German cinemas on April 21, 2022.
If you’re afraid that after enjoying the trailer you won’t be able to stand it any longer until the cinema release, you can read the complete script in advance. It is available in paperback format in English from online retailers such as Amazon. The soundtrack album with the emotional film music by Arthur Sharpe is also available at the same place.
A big lineup of stars
In addition to “Doctor Strange” and “Sherlock Holmes” star Benedict Cumberbatch, a large number of other well-known actors are involved in director Will Sharpe’s (“Landscapers”) film, which is as playful as it is turbulent. In the trailer, we already see Claire Foy (“The Crown”), Andrea Riseborough from “Possessor”, Toby Jones (“Queen, King, Ace, Spy”), and Stacy Martin (“Nymph()maniac 1 + 2”).
If you look closely, you can even catch glimpses of Adeel Akhtar from the Netflix series “Sweet Tooth”, “Thor 3 + 4” director and “Jojo Rabbit” star Taika Waititi, and indie rock icon Nick Cave. The original English version also features Oscar winner Olivia Colman (“The father”) to be heard as a narrator.
