Available tonight on Canal +, Starstruck is a little English nugget about a young woman who spent a night with a famous actor. A real comedy, a little romantic.
What is it about ?
Jessie, a “millennial” living in London, has two jobs. After spending a night with a celebrity, she will discover a difficult tomorrow …
Starstruck, a series created by Rose Matafeo with Rose Matafeo, Nikesh Patel… The 6 episodes from 9:00 pm on Canal + Séries and available on MyCanal.
Jessie has a slightly drunken New Years Eve and wakes up the next morning in Tom Kapoor’s (Nikesh Patel) bed, only to realize at that point that she just spent the night with a movie star. Anyone familiar with romantic comedies will quickly understand the rest: several episodes to turn around, a big argument and reconciliation.
But Starstruck skilfully plays with the codes of the genre, enough to let us get caught up in the game. And it holds mainly thanks to his heroine. Jessie is embodied by New Zealand humorist Rose Matafeo, also creator of the series, still little known on this side of the hemisphere. But not for long.
Composed of 6 episodes of 22 minutes that are pecked like candy, Starstruck takes place over four seasons. Time to let Jessie and Tom develop a relationship credibly and without falling in love at first sight. Tom’s fame makes their relationship all the more unlikely as Jessie leads a teenage life, accumulating two precarious jobs: a popcorn seller in a movie theater and a nanny.
The series also thwarts clichés by showing that Tom has a serious crush on Jessie, whose humor, spontaneity and zest for life make her irresistible. Despite a bad temper and bad faith which sometimes take the upper hand. The other strong point, their relationship remains secret and is therefore not polluted by the tabloids or hysterical fans.
And unlike the title of the series “starstruck” which literally means “in awe of the stars”, Jessie never plays groupies. On the contrary. In his phone, Tom is recorded as “Tom Famous” or “Tom Famous” and vice versa, in Tom’s phone, Jessie is “Jessie NYE” or “Jessie New Year”.
Since we tell you that it is an inverted Notting Hill …
