CRITICAL / REVIEWS SERIES – The fourth animated series derived from the “Star Wars” universe has just concluded on Disney +. Still directed by Dave Filoni, the show traces the new adventures of The Bad Batch, a team of clones unlike any other.
What’s this The Bad Batch ?
Dave Filoni is the undisputed boss of animated series Star wars. It was he who, along with George Lucas, launched The clone wars in 2008. Faced with the success of this series, whose final season was released last year, Dave Filoni has directed other animated series, to know Star Wars Rebels and Star Wars Resistance. His new creation, The Bad Batch, has been broadcast every Friday at the rate of one episode per week since Tuesday, May 4 on Disney +.
So, Star Wars: The Bad Batch is part of the continuity of The clone wars. The show chronicles the events following Order 66 through the Bad Batch, a team of 5 atypical clones. The latter, introduced in season 7 of The clone wars, are irregular and do not fit into the mold. Due to their abnormal status, they are insensitive to Order 66, and will therefore follow their own path.
Dave Filoni’s Worst Animated Series!
After a rather convincing 70-minute first episode, The Bad Batch is overall disappointing. Dave Filoni signs a lazy series, which takes all the clichés of the genre, without adapting them to its theme. Obviously, the showrunner is starting to run out of inspiration, and here signs a disappointing pastiche of Clone Wars. The filmmaker does not manage to take his Bad Batch to new lands. It accumulates free fan service, scriptwriting banalities and suffers from a cruel lack of inventiveness. Dave Filoni serves his classic recipe and realizes episodes always more common than the others. It clearly lacks surprise, even usefulness.

The idea of bringing Omega, a new heroine into the universe Star wars, isn’t necessarily a bad thing on paper. But for now, this unknown heroine is poorly developed. Dave Filoni signs the classic portrait of a child in the world of Star wars. An elected child, with a heart on her hand, ready to do anything to help her neighbor.
A cruel lack of renewal …
To hide this lack of renewal, Dave Filoni fills his episodes with appearances of all kinds. They are sometimes big, like Fenec or Cad Bane (best episode of the season), but are often expected and not necessarily essential like Hera Syndulla as a child, or the two smugglers of the last season of Clone Wars. Through this process, the filmmaker is content to offer rude winks, just to keep its audience in suspense … Even its protagonists are stereotypes that lack flavor. A Bad Batch in which one of the characters is of no practical use (RIP Echo), and which accumulates clichés: the leader, the big man, the intellectual, and the traitor.

Globally, The Bad Batch is thus a tasteless series, much less successful than its predecessors. And it’s a shame, because some themes, like the evolution of clones in the universe Star wars, remain interesting. But the potential of this idea is never properly developed. However, the series is already renewed for a season 2, which will be released in 2022.
