“Rogue Squadron”, the next film from the “Star Wars” franchise has just been postponed. The reason is apparently caused by artistic differences between filmmaker Patty Jenkins and the producers of the film.
Rogue Squadron : the next opus in the Star Wars saga
Since the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the universe Star wars developed further on Disney +. Season 2 of The Mandalorian made the fans happy and Star Wars Visions offered a new horizon to the license, while many other projects are coming to the platform. Indeed, The Book of Boba Fett arrives on December 29, while the series Andor and Obi-wan will be released in early 2022.
On the cinema side, it’s a little more complicated. The only film project to be officially in production is Rogue Squadron. Expected for December 20, 2023, the feature film, inspired by the eponymous video game was to be the first to be made by a woman. Indeed, it is Patty Jenkins (Wonder woman) who was chosen to direct this new film Star wars. Unfortunately, the agreement between Patty Jenkins and Disney is not at the top.
Creative differences
According to a journalist initiated in the Hollywood world, Rogue Squadron will be late and will surely not be able to meet its Christmas 2023 release date. Although LucasFilm has not commented on the matter, Matthew belloni, the former editor-in-chief of The Hollywood Reporter, has indeed revealed that Patty Jenkins is frustrated with the management of her project by LucasFilm. The journalist wrote in particular that:
It’s not unusual, of course, but it’s a ridiculously recurring problem at Lucasfilm under President Kathleen Kennedy. The best filmmakers are dying to make a Star Wars movie. Until they sign and experiment with micro-management and move forward on the plot point by point following a whole process.

Thereby, Patty Jenkins has licensing issues Star wars. She is not the first to confront the decisions of LucasFilm and Disney, and to encounter creative differences. It happened in particular to David Benioff and Dan Weiss, the creators of Game Of Thrones, who were to make a film for a while Star wars. But the latter abandoned the adventure because of different creatives with Disney. Matthew Belloni also talks about it in his article:
It happened to the guys from Game of Thrones. David Benioff and Dan Weiss were hired to create a new trilogy before being dismissed. It also happened to Rian Johnson. The 2017 screenwriter and director of The Last Jedi, saw his own trilogy slated to be shelved. Jenkins wasn’t willing to stand in line, and she has other plans, including Wonder Woman 3 at Warner Bros., where she enjoys more creative freedom.
For the time being, Patty Jenkins is always on the adventure. But the filmmaker has many other projects on the go, notably Cleopatra and Wonder woman 3, and if Disney doesn’t let her work the way she wants, it is possible that the latter will abandon the ship. After all, it happens a lot in Hollywood. For example, Edgar Wright had to stage Ant-Man and Scott Derrickson had to return for Doctor Strange 2, but the two filmmakers slammed the door to Marvel. It remains to be seen whether Patty Jenkins will do the same or not.
