“I Wanna Dance With Somebody” tells of the fairytale rise of Whitney Houston (Naomi Ackie) to one of the biggest stars in pop music history. As the daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston (Tamara Tunie) and little cousin of soul star Dionne Warwick, she was born with the talent. Young Whitney loves to sing in church, but doesn’t think about making it a career.
One night, however, she has to stand in for Cissy, who is ill, at a club show. This had previously seen that the legendary record company boss Clive Davis (Stanley Tucci) is in the audience. Whitney goes on stage and inspires the discoverer of megastars like Bruce Springsteen or Barry Manilow with her phenomenal voice and he signs her.
A first hit was quickly followed by others and the young woman became a global star with her debut album released in 1985. The second long player does even better and Houston embarks on a hugely successful world tour. At an awards show, she meets R&B artist and notorious “bad boy” Bobby Brown (Ashton Sanders). In 1992, the year in which she played the leading role in the hit movie “Bodyguard”, the two of them had their dream wedding…
“I Wanna Dance With Somebody” will be released in German cinemas nationwide on December 22, 2022.
The staging of “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” was taken over by director Kasi Lemmons (“Harriet – The Way to Freedom”). The producers also hired a real biopic expert for the script: Anthony McCarten. The New Zealander has already written the screenplays for award winners such as “The Discovery of Infinity”, “The Darkest Hour”, “The Two Popes” and – in this case probably the most relevant! – the Queen film “Bohemian Rhapsody”.
Naomi Ackie stars as Whitney Houston. The Londoner played her most important role to date as resistance fighter Jannah in “Star Wars 9: The Rise of Skywalker”. She has also had parts in the thriller musical The Score, Lady Macbeth and the streaming series The End Of The F***ing World.
Joining Ackie are Stanley Tucci (Road To Perdition), Ashton Sanders (Judas And The Black Messiah), Tamara Tunie (Wall Street), The Wire star Clarke Peters and Nafessa Williams from Black Lightning. included.
