We’re so close to the Season 1 finale of House Of The Dragon, and it’s not even really started yet, the “Dance of the Dragons”, which is actually what the fantasy series is supposed to be about. With many jumps in time and changes of actors, only the prehistory has been told so far – So how the situation in the Targaryen house could deteriorate so much that in the end the half-siblings Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) fight bloody and with dragon use for the Iron Throne.
George RR Martin called this civil war “Dance Of The Dragons”, about which he tells, among other things, in his book “Fire and Ice” – and on his blog the “Game Of Thrones” author has revealed how many episodes it takes to tell this story.

“It takes four full seasons of ten episodes each to do ‘Dance the Dragon’ justice from start to finish.”, writes Martin, who is an executive producer on the series. So does that mean that House Of The Dragon will only last four seasons, assuming Martin’s vision is fulfilled?
No, “House Of The Dragon” can go much, much longer – namely, because the series doesn’t stop after “Dance Of The Dragons”, but also tells other stories from the Targaryen Dynasty. There are still enough exciting events, for example the conquest of Dorne or the first Blackfyre rebellion. And of course, starting with Season 5 of House Of The Dragon, you could jump back in time and tell the story of Aegon the Conqueror who took over much of Westeros.
Showrunner Miguel Sapochnik has already explained that the “House Of The Dragon” series doesn’t have to end after “Dance of the Dragons”. Entertainment Weekly. “House Of The Dragon” can do one anthology series in which various Targaryen stories are told.
“That’s one of the interesting things about the Targaryens. We chose a story that was almost like ‘Star Wars: Episode IV’ is. […] We can go backwards from there, we can go forward. There are many possibilities. I hope we get an opportunity to make something of this,” said Sapochnik, who also served as a co-writer on Season 1 and, although no longer serving as showrunner as of Season 2, will remain on the series as producer.
From season 2, Sapochnik’s colleague Ryan Condal will take over the showrunner’s helm alone. Filming will begin in spring 2023, making it almost certain that we won’t see Season 2 of House Of The Dragon until 2024. It remains to be seen whether we will end up with four, eight, ten or even more seasons of the hit series – but with the eventful family history of the Targaryens, anything is actually possible.
Episode 9 of “House Of The Dragon” is coming to Sky and WOW (formerly Sky Ticket) on October 17, 2022. You can find out what Viserys’ (Paddy Considine) last words in episode 8 are all about here:
