With “Star Trek: PicardPatrick Stewart made a big comeback in 2020 as legendary ex-enterprise captain Jean-Luc Picard. Even if there are already some guest appearances from other well-known faces from “Starship Enterprise: The Next Century” aka “Star Trek: The Next Generation”, “Picard” was not a direct “Next Generation” successor series in the first two seasons, as the Starfleet icon assembled a completely new crew for his new space adventures. In the final third season, however, things look a little different.
The “Picard” veterans Michelle Hurd as Raffi and Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine are also back in the game. As was already revealed a few months ago, all (!) main actors and actresses from “Next Generation” will also be making their comeback in leading roles. Joining guest stars Jonathan Frakes (Will Riker), Marina Sirtis (Deanna Troi) and Brent Spiner (Data) are LeVar Burton (Geordi LaForge), Michael Dorn (Worf) and Gates McFadden (Beverly Crusher). “Picard” debut.
In the trailer we now see for the first time how all recurring characters more than 20 years after their last joint role in the movie “Star Trek: Nemesis”. – with one exception: There is still no trace of Brent Spiner in the video, as a secret is still being made as to what form he will return in (this time). Android Data is finally dead, but Spiner has also appeared in other roles (mostly the human relatives of Data builder Dr. Noonien Soong) in the past. This will probably be the case again this time.
What kind of interstellar threat is bringing the old crew back together is also unclear. At first, however, Picard and Riker seem to be looking for a ship – and they seem to find what they are looking for in the preview above. At the end of the video, they come together on board the USS Titan, which is apparently under the command of Seven of Nine. Whether this will be the same Titan once commanded by Riker (post-Enterprise) or a new model remains to be seen.
Surprisingly, the new trailer already reveals the date for the new episodes – and it’s not too far away. Since the production of season 3 was seamlessly connected to that of the second season, it goes much faster this time, as hoped. While there were still more than two years between the start of seasons 1 and 2, the final season is now less than a year after the start of the previous season:
The third “Star Trek: Picard”-Season starts on February 16, 2023 on the US streaming service Paramount +, the big series finale will then rise there on April 20. However, the situation in Germany is still somewhat uncertain. Thanks to a deal with Amazon, episodes from the first two seasons have always been available a day after their US premiere on Amazon Prime Video (where the series is even somewhat misleadingly called the Amazon Original).
» “Star Trek: Picard” on Amazon Prime Video*
However, the actual original “Picard” home Paramount+ will also start in this country at the end of 2022, which is why it could be that season 3 will only appear there exclusively (and possibly also seasons 1 and 2 will migrate from Prime Video). We should find out at some point in the next few months whether this will really be the case.
