Not necessarily expected at its release, “Squid Game” is becoming the new phenomenon of Netflix. The South Korean series could even become the most popular in the history of the streaming platform.
Squid Game, the new box of Netflix
On September 17, Netflix uploaded the 9 episodes of Squid Game. The pitch of the South Korean series is simple. We follow 456 people in financial difficulties, who agree to participate in a mysterious tournament. This consists of several childish games. But there is obviously a twist: if a candidate is eliminated, he dies. On the other hand, the winner pockets tens of millions of dollars.
This plot is reminiscent of those of Battle royale and Hunger Games, films already centered on characters forced to take part in survival games, and which have become particularly popular. And since its launch, the show imagined by Hwang Dong-hyuk is also a real hit. According to Deadline, Squid Game topped Netflix’s most watched shows in 90 different countries, 10 days after launch! And the series could dethrone Bridgerton and become the most popular series of the streaming service!
Towards the record of views on the platform
At a recent conference, Ted Sarandos, the co-CEO of Netflix, spoke about the success of the show. He confessed to being very surprised by his overall popularity, which he “Had not seen it coming”. And, as reported by Deadline, he revealed that Squid Game was undoubtedly going to become the most popular non-English series on the platform. Sarandos did not stop there, adding that she had “Very good chances” to become the most viewed series in the history of Netflix, all languages combined.
However, in recent months, Netflix sees fewer new subscribers than in the past. This is explained by the recent increase in prices of the platform. As well as the fierce competition she now faces. Because Disney + or Amazon Prime Video were launched only a few months ago to compete with the streaming giant. The feat would therefore be all the more beautiful if Squid Game managed to settle at the top of the ranking of the most popular series in Netflix history.
