The “Squid Game” series is undoubtedly Netflix’s biggest success of 2021. A true phenomenon, ranking first in the top 10 in many countries, the Korean series leaves the door open for a possible season 2. But what? does the creator say?
Squid Game: the Netflix phenomenon of 2021
Discreetly released on the platform on September 17th, Squid Game has become in a few days a real phenomenon. Indeed, the Korean series ranks at the top of the top 10 in many countries, including France. It might even become the biggest hit in Netflix history.
Located somewhere between Battle royale and Hunger Games, the series focuses on the story of Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), who after a combination of circumstances, will find himself participating in a mysterious game to pocket nearly 33 million euros. But to do this, he will have to come out alive from six deadly mini-games, in which 455 other players participate.
In nine 60-minute episodes, the series immerses us in the hell of these deadly games. Like the main character, a question torments the minds of the spectators: who is behind all this? If the end of Squid Game partially answers this question, it leaves the door open to a possible season 2. What about the rest? The creator responded.
Season 2 coming soon?
Faced with such an impressive success, Netflix must obviously consider offering a season 2 to Squid Game. Still, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk recently said he didn’t feel like going back to work yet. Indeed, the process of Season 1 took him time, as he told Variety.
The writing was difficult for me because it was a series. And not from a movie. It took me six months to write and rewrite just the first two episodes (…) I don’t have any plans for a season 2 yet. It tires me just thinking about it. But if I had to do it, I certainly wouldn’t do it alone. I would consider hiring writers, and also experienced directors.
Thereby, he doesn’t close the door to new episodes. It seems obvious that Netflix will do everything to allow it to approach a season 2 with more serenity. We do not really see how the platform could not follow up the biggest phenomenon of 2021.
