We have already explained in more detail in one of our articles in the past that original episodes can be both a blessing and a curse. Spy x Family also recently took advantage of it, releasing an episode with a lot of original content, which subsequently received mixed reviews.
Criticism of bad pacing
Specifically, it is about the fifth episode entitled »Passed or failed«. We don’t want to go into detail about the content of said episode and therefore you don’t have to fear any spoilers. The plot is based on just eight pages of the manga and was accordingly embellished to a large extent with original content.
Anyone who has read our previous article knows that these so-called filler episodes have a very negative reputation and like to be criticized at every opportunity. In the case of »Spy x Family«, however, the criticism was by no means related to the animation quality.
Rather, concerns were expressed about the basic necessity of this episode as well as the simple content and bad pacing. That’s how the anime started and the fans don’t understand why there is already a filler episode whose original purpose is to play for time.
Quite a few therefore fear that the makers want to delay the plot, so that the anime becomes a bestseller due to the fans’ expectations and hype. Let’s hope that this doesn’t backfire and result in a negative effect. We have summarized some of the comments from the viewers for you below:
- “If you found that boring, congratulations. Welcome to the Original Episodes.«
- “The whole thing was like a watered down version of the original story. The charm was gone.«
- “Progress was so slow I turned off halfway through the episode.”
- “The pacing was so stretched that it took away from the enjoyment of the story.”
- “I figured the pacing suddenly changed before I realized it was original content… The episode’s animation was beautiful, but the script was horrible.”

His name is Forger. Loid Forger. Nickname: Twilight. The assignment: »Find a family as a cover. Infiltrate the famed Eden Academy. Prevent the impending war between East and West!« What he doesn’t know: his adopted daughter can read minds and his newly minted wife is a contract killer…?! Uff, organizing this family is a different matter than countering terrorism and defusing atomic bombs!
