Sony patents faceplates, new official colors soon?

Since its launch, the PS5 has only been offered in white. People who want to give their console a bit of color, or black, have to customize it themselves. Or buy unofficial side plates offered by various props. Recent activity from Sony, however, suggests that the situation could change soon.

Sony has patented the PS5 faceplates with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). As reported by the American site The Verge, the deposit was indeed made just before the release of the PS5 last year. And the patent granted by the USPTO was released on November 16.

PS5 faceplates to accompany the DualSense?

Does this mean that Sony is preparing to market interchangeable PS5 faceplates? Impossible to say at the moment. However, the possibility appears more and more probable.

Sony currently sells three colors of DualSense controllers: white, black and red. Keeping this element in mind, it is possible to imagine that if there are interchangeable faceplates, they will be offered in black and red. At least initially.

Sticks in the wheels of props?

That being said, another possibility also exists. Sony’s partners could very well offer official side plates in the colors of their games. Buyers of the first PS4 model, for example, remember that part of the cover of their console could be personalized in this way. Commercially, offering PS5 faceplates would therefore make sense for Sony.

These side plates having been removed, several questions now arise. Is Sony finally preparing to market it in different colors? This would allow consumers to customize the look of their console. Or did the giant do this to simplify possible legal actions against props? Some of these have been playing with fire, and in some cases directly provoking Sony, for months.

Finally, let us recall that Sony promised in June 2020 the release “special editions“(potentially”radically different“) of PS5. Only time will tell what the Japanese manufacturer is really up to.

What do you think of the filing of this patent concerning the PS5 side plates? Do you think Sony will market any soon? If so, would you be interested in such products? And if so, what color would you like to get? Give us your opinion in the comments below.
