Best known for his funny roles, but very versatile Jim Carrey has announced that he is now likely to stop acting. Surely he will at least take a break.

Jim Carrey has been back in German cinemas since March 31, 2022, and plays a role in “Sonic 2” that is reminiscent of his days as a grimace cutter in “Ace Ventura” or “The Mask”: the evil Dr. Robotnik, a villain who, like Sonic, comes from the video games and above all comes across as funny instead of really menacing. It may be that Jim Carrey ends his career as an actor with this performance and thus comes full circle.
Only the angels can bring Carrey back to the movies
In an interview with the magazine Access, Jim Carrey told a visibly surprised Kit Hoover that he might be retiring. Here is his statement in translated text (below you can see the interview in the video):
“Well, I’m retiring. Yes, probably. I mean that quite seriously. It depends. If the angels bring me a screenplay written in golden ink and tell me that mankind really needs to see this film, I might go on eventually, but I will [auf Jeden Fall] taking a break.”
Jim Carrey rose to superstardom in his comedic roles in the ’90s, before showing the world his nuanced, sensitive side on The Truman Show and Forget Me Not, proving he could transport nuances at least as well as grimaces able to cut. By the 2010s, he was already dwindling as an actor, so his performance as the “Sonic” villain has seen as something of a comeback — before that his last major film role was in the comedy sequel “Dumb and Dumber.”
By the way, a very good look at Jim Carrey’s career is provided by a recently released ARTE documentary that is really worth seeing, which you can also watch here:
Painting instead of acting
Jim Carrey has devoted himself to painting overacting for some time now and in his interviews, he appears reflected and thoughtful about the things that now count above all else in his life. In conversation with Access he said:
“I really like my quiet life and I really like painting paint on canvas and I like my spiritual life and I believe – and this is something you may never hear from any other star – that I’ve had enough. I’ve done enough I am enough”
