Taylor Hackford’s new thriller “Sniff” reveals its literally mind-blowing cast. The work will take place in a retirement home and bring together an imposing cast led by Morgan Freeman.
Who is Taylor Hackford?
Maybe the name Taylor Hackford doesn’t ring a bell. However, in a thirty-year career, this 76-year-old American filmmaker has directed iconic films. It is in particular to him that we owe for example Night Sun, the excellent The Devil’s Associate with Al Pacino and Keanu Reeves, The Exchange with Meg Ryan and Russell Crowe or the incredible Ray, the biopic on Ray Charles with Jamie Foxx in the title role.
This year, he returns with a new achievement: Sniff.
What’s this Sniff ?
Sniff is Taylor Hackford’s new movie, who wrote the screenplay himself. This is a new film noir worn by a totally stunning cast of iconic actors. Sniff will tell how a pair of detectives are tasked with investigating a luxury nursing home after the mysterious death of two residents. Soon, the two policemen discover a dark world controlled by a femme fatale from the senior community: The Spider.
Taylor Hackford surrounded himself with the best, with an impressive leading quartet. To play The Spider, Oscar-winning actress Helen Mirren was hired. To support him, two other Oscar-winning actors come to lend him a hand : Morgan Freeman as one of the two investigators and Al Pacino as The Spider’s husband. The cast completes with the big comeback of Danny DeVito, who will play the second policeman and that we recently saw in Jumanji: Next Level and Dumbo. In a recent interview for Deadline, Taylor Hackford explained that Sniff was inspired by Claws of the past by Jacques Tourneur and his own movie Against all odds released in 1984:
The whole concept is to shoot a film noir in a community of high-end retirees… These are proliferating all over the United States as the baby boom generation retires. There is a lot of money, and people want to live in beautiful surroundings. It’s on the brochures, but what Tom Gray did was show what was hiding beneath the surface. I thought it was a brilliant idea. Adam and Matt said, “It’s up to you if you want to make a movie out of it.” I met the writer, Tom Gray. We worked together, writing him and I coming up with ideas.
With Sniff, Taylor Hackford says she wants to revive the film noir genre, like Knives Out did it with the thriller. He praised the work of Rian Johnson in particular:
I loved what Rian Johnson did in terms of rehabilitating an old genre, thriller. I want to do the same with Sniff and film noir. There is a stylistic quotient in the writing and the characters that enlighten the viewer. There is fun in film noir. Especially when you get a Bogart, a Mitchum, someone who knows how to deliver good dialogue. That’s what Tom wrote, and I think it will be fun with the actors.
According to producer Adam Goodman, the aim is to start production of Sniff at the start of 2022. The film is expected at the end of next year. In any case, with such a cast, expectations will be high!
