Released in 2018, “Skyscraper” is a blockbuster worn by Dwayne Johnson. The plot of the film takes place almost entirely inside a huge building: the Pearl. Focus on this fictitious building, which was imagined as a real infrastructure.
Skyscraper: change of register for Dwayne Johnson
Dwayne Johnson, accustomed to the roles of adventurers in the middle of the Amazon jungle and detective comedies, finds himself here immersed in a disaster thriller somewhere between Crystal trap and The Infernal Tower. Directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber in 2018, Skyscraper recounts how Will Sawyer (Dwayne Johnson), former FBI agent and veteran of the United States Army, finds himself responsible for the security of a brand new skyscraper: the Pearl. Will is accused of having voluntarily started a fire in this huge building. Here he is launched in a frantic race to prove his innocence and arrest those who try to trap him.
Skyscraper did not really mark the spirits. Rather poorly received by professional critics and spectators, it generated more than $304 million in box office receipts (for a budget of 125 million). A score that is not shameful, but not enough to claim victory for all that.
The creation of the Pearl
The story of Skyscraper, therefore, takes place entirely at the interior of the Pearl, a huge fictional building imagined for the occasion. of a height of 1km and composed of 225 floors, this construction is taller than any existing skyscraper. To get an idea of size, the Pearl measures approximately three times the size of the Empire State Building. Currently, the tallest building in Hong Kong is actually the International Commerce Center with over 100 floors.
Since the plot of the film takes place in China, the team of Skyscraper decided to pay tribute to the culture of this oriental country. James D. Bissell, the head of the film decoration team, then came across a Chinese legend called “The Pearl of the Dragon”. A folk story in which a young boy turns into a dragon in a mysterious river. Pearls represent absolute knowledge in Chinese culture. The Pearl River estuary empties near Hong Kong. This river is often symbolized by a dragon.
After scouting, the building of Skyscraper was located in the Kowloon peninsula to allow Hong Kong to be in the background. Coincidentally, the name Kowloon means “nine dragons”. James D. Bissell therefore based himself on this legend and on what it represents to imagine his building. He, too, wanted this creation of man to become an immense dragon synonymous with strength and wisdom.
James D. Bissell then imagined a building whose appearance was to recall that of a rising dragon. According to him, the building should represent:
strength and resilience, the exact opposite of La Tour infernale, symbol of excessive pride and whose implicit message is that ‘we have gone too far’. In this film from the 70s, there were corrupt promoters and a crooked architect. Whereas, in Skyscraper, the building is fabulous. Its only flaw is to be coveted by malevolent forces.
A futuristic building
Indeed, this skyscraper is a splendid dream. It is a self-sufficient building, powered by solar and wind energy sources. This building even has a negative carbon footprint. It is made up of numerous wind turbines and solar panels on its roof and even has artificial basins that reproduce the phenomenon of the tides.
The building also has within it many places to relax and have fun. According to the technical team, the Pearl is made up of three sports halls, 16 cinemas, a five-star hotel, a golf course, a shopping center, a three-star restaurant, and hundreds of apartments. You almost want to spend your holidays there.
