Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” was released in September 2021. But did you know that this new Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie could have introduced Deadpool? Here is what this sequence would have looked like which was not kept.
Shang Chi : Change of atmosphere
Released September 1, 2021, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was intended to reproduce the enthusiasm around Black Panther. The goal is to take the spectators into another culture and another country: China. It is in this logic that Marvel Studios decides to cast a distribution almost 100% of Asian origin (like Black Panther had done with African-American culture). Thus, the staging is entrusted to Destin Daniel Cretton, while the cast is notably composed of Simu Liu in Shang-ChiAwkwafina, Fala Chen, Michelle Yeoh or even Tony Leung as the Mandarin.
Without reproducing the immense triumph of Black Panther, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings still met with some success. The film received generally positive reviews, was nominated for an Oscar and above all brought in more than $432 million in box office receipts.
Deadpool almost landed in the movie
Like all MCU movies, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is full of easter eggs and cameos. That’s why The Abomination is making a comeback in Shang Chialmost fifteen years after its premiere and last appearance in The Incredible Hulk in 2008. But the feature film could have featured another huge cameo, Deadpool’s.
Remember, in 2017, Disney bought the 20th Century Fox and its entire catalog of films. Thus, the firm with the big ears recovered the rights of exploitation of many characters, including the X-Men, which also includes Deadpool. After his two solo films under the aegis of Fox, Deadpool will soon officially join the MCU with Deadpool 3. But the entrance of the mercenary in red tights could have been done earlier, since Kevin Feige thought of presenting Wade Wilson in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
A bit like The Abomination, the bounty hunter would have found himself in the middle of the arena facing a character already installed in the MCU: Proxima Midnight. The latter was one of Thanos’ minions and is supposed to have died in Avengers : Infinity War. His presence in Shang Chi would therefore certainly have disturbed the fans and would have demanded an explanation.
The information regarding the possible presence of Deadpool in this MCU film was shared by Andrew Kim, an artist who creates concept art for Marvel Studios. One of his works thus represents the clash between Deadpool and Proxima Midnight in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Unfortunately, the idea did not ultimately come to fruition and fans will have to wait a little longer before finding Deadpool in the cinema. But be patient, Wade Wilson will be back in Deadpool 3still in the guise of Ryan Reynolds.
