Released in 1996, “Scream” marked a whole generation. One scene, in particular, has stuck in people’s minds: that of the first murder, the victim of which was the character played by Drew Barrymore. 25 years later, the actress replayed this scene in a hilarious way.
Scream : the revival of the slasher
While Scream 5 (simply renamed Scream) will arrive with fanfare next year, remember that the adventure began in 1996. Indeed, in 1996, Wes Craven directed a particularly original horror film named Scream. To direct his feature film, he chooses to mix genres, mixing comedy with detective film and slasher. All this without ever going into parody – what will do next Scary Movie. It thus offers a superb satire on the horror film, and more generally on the cinema in general. A brilliant mise en abyme that we did not expect from the director.
The film was then a big critical and commercial success, bringing in 173.4 million dollars worldwide (for a budget of 14 million dollars). Scream also allows to relaunch the career of Wes Craven, in addition to starifying actors who until now knew only a small notoriety (Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Arquette). In addition to benefiting from several suites that will allow the establishment of a franchise, the feature film relaunches the slasher sub-genre, which was in complete distress in recent years. This thanks to the killer of the film Ghostface, who enters the pantheon of famous fictional murderers, alongside Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees.
Scream also allowed to put forward an actress: Drew Barrymore. Revealed very young with AND The Alien, the actress then had a complicated career until her appearance in the feature film. If his character of Casey is quickly killed off early in the film, the quality of the sequence as well as the performance of the actress remain in the memories of the spectators.
Drew Barrymore reunites with Ghostface
If his stealthy scene allowed him to play again in ambitious productions (Charlie and his funny ladies, for example), Drew Barrymore was especially remembered for his role of little blonde murdered by Ghostface. On the occasion of his talk show The Drew Barrymore Show, the actress received a disturbing call from the iconic killer of the saga Scream. Indeed, to celebrate the return of the franchise to the cinema, the star parodied his old role by discussing in a more calm manner with Ghostface who once again tries to manipulate her psychologically. Except this time the joke doesn’t take anymore and the actress sends the killer directly to David Arquette – who plays Dewey in the saga!

A delusional sequence that has gone viral on Tiktok since Ghostface adapts to its time by asking the actress to get on the famous application to continue the conversation. He even tries to coax her by telling her he’s watching her show. Except that Casey has aged well and that she will not be fooled again.
It is in any case with nostalgia that we follow this sequence, because it is true that apart from his talk-show, Drew Barrymore has become much rarer in the movies in recent years. His latest landmark performance is mostly on the small screen with the series Santa Clarita Diet, which unfortunately only lasted two seasons before a surprising cancellation by Netflix.
Anyway, his parody call is a nice promotion for the next one Scream, scheduled for January 12, 2022.
