School Life: is the Grand Corps Malade film inspired by a true story?

After directing “Patients”, the duo Grand Corps Malade and Mehdi Idir were back in 2019 with “La Vie Scolaire”, a new social comedy. But on what scale is this new film inspired by real events?

Student services office : the new proposal of Grand Corps Malade

After making a name for himself in the world of music thanks to his astonishing and poetic slams, Grand Corps Malade has recently turned to the seventh art. After a short appearance in 93 the beautiful rebel (2010), and after having lent her voice to animated films Jack and the mechanics of the heart (2013) and Sahara (2017), Grand Corps Malade has decided to shift into second gear and produce their own productions. In 2016 he joined forces with Mehdi Idir to write and produce patientswhich tells his story and his handicap, through the character of Benjamin (Pablo Pauly).

Following the success of his first film (4 César nominations), the singer decides to do it again with Student services office. Via a lighter subject, Grand Corps Malade signs a rhythmic and intelligent comedy. This time he composes an exciting cast worn by comedians and comedians such as Zita Hanrot, Soufiane Guerrab, Alban Ivanov and even Redouane Bougheraba.

Is the film inspired by real events?

Whereas patients was autobiographical, Student services office strays from the true story itself. The second film of Grand Corps Malade tells the daily life of a young CPE. Originally from Ardèche, she took her first steps in Seine Saint-Denis. She quickly finds herself confronted with the snags of students in difficulty and disillusioned teachers. Student services office is a fair, funny and sometimes touching social comedywhich is more or less inspired by true stories.

Contrary to patients, Student services office does not tell of the youth of Grand Corps Malade. On the other hand, the singer, who grew up in Seine Saint-Denisand his friend Mehdi Idir were inspired by some of their childhood stories. For example, in the film, one of the students is always late. To justify himself to the CPE, he always invents implausible excuses.

This character was modeled on a certain Farid. Also from Saint-Denis, he told totally crazy stories to avoid punishment. Become legendary, little Farid would have even said, once, that he was stealing a helicopter to explain his delay in college.

The role of the math teacher (Soufiane Guerrab) is also inspired by a true teacher as Grand Corps Malade explained at the time of the release of his film:

We love Soufiane Guerrab so much humanly and artistically that we almost gave her the role. But we wanted it to be feminine, so we gave it the second: that of Messaoud. This math teacher respected by students, authoritarian and lodger is inspired by the personality of a friend. A physics associate born in Saint-Denis who always wanted to teach there.

Thus, without being strictly speaking a true story, Student services office is inspired by snippets of real-life characters; and seeks to be as realistic as possible. And the bet is successful as the Grand Corps Malade film is a touching tribute to these education professionals national who try to do their best for these young people in difficulty.
