The divorce was almost pronounced between Scarlett Johansson and Disney last July due to the disagreement over the simultaneous release of Black Widow in theaters and on Disney + in the United States. But things have settled down and the American actress recently opened up about why she wanted to continue working with the studio on new projects.
Scarlett Johansson vs Disney: All’s Well That Ends Well
Last July, the film Black widow released in French theaters. This is the last appearance of Scarlett Johansson as the superheroine. Due to the health crisis and the complicated situation it causes for theaters, Disney decides to release the film simultaneously in theaters and on Disney + in the United States. But the actress, who also turns out to be executive producer feature film, is stepping up to the plate.
Indeed, she decides to file a complaint against Disney for breach of contract. The latter stipulated that Black widow had to go out exclusively in theaters. The actress’ salary was indexed to the number of admissions, and she estimated the financial losses at 50 millions of dollars.
Scarlett Johansson’s complaint made a lot of noise, and Disney quickly counterattacked by deeming the lawsuit “particularly sad and distressing in its callous disregard for the horrific global and prolonged effects of the Covid-19 pandemic”. Ultimately, after a few days of arm wrestling, Disney agrees to compensate the actress to the tune of 40 million dollars.
“Like a family”
The beautiful relationship between the actress and Disney therefore continues, and the latter is already involved in two future projects. The first is an adaptation of the famous Tower of Terror attraction, the second is a secret project linked to Marvel. In both cases, she will be executive producer.
Scarlett Johansson revealed in an interview with Collider why she wanted to continue working with Disney, this time as a producer:
I’ve been working for 30 years (…) I think I understand the mechanics of this industry, and how films are made. Being part of a team of talents who all create together in order to realize an idea, enchants me enormously. That’s why I want to produce more and more for other people. With Marvel, it’s like working as a family. They do not impose any creative limits, all dreams are allowed.
