Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy was not the commercial success expected by Square Enix. Once again, the editor considers that the sales are lower than the forecasts.
Sometimes being a good game is unfortunately not enough. A bitter observation of which Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is today a victim, despite the fact that the title offers a pleasant adventure.
You can’t win every time
Star-Lord, Rocket, Groot, Gamora, and Drax failed to break sales records by Square Enix’s expectations. In a new financial statement, the publisher shows its disappointment with the performance of Eidos Montreal’s game:
Despite good reviews, sales of the game at launch were lower than our initial expectations. However, the commercial initiatives undertaken in November 2021 and renewed in 2022 have led to an increase in sales. We intend to continue in this direction to compensate for the title’s difficult start.
What is a “hard start” and sales below expectations? Good questions, but Square Enix won’t give the answer publicly and hasn’t released the numbers. Maybe one day…
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, is yet another disappointment for Square
No figures or explanations, but this disappointing result for the publisher can be justified in various ways. First, Marvel’s Avengers, which was a real failure on several levels, had to cool more than one player who remained suspicious. Second, the gameplay videos, to be honest, we’re less of a sellout than the final game and didn’t reflect its quality. Finally, the “lower” popularity of the band was perhaps synonymous with a less bright future than that of Marvel’s Spider-Man, for example.
If this feeling of disappointment sounds familiar to you, it’s because the company has already been unhappy with the performance of the Tomb Raider released in 2013. At first, sales were not high enough but over time, the title had reversed the tendency.
