Mother / Android, written and directed by Mattson Tomlin.
WHO IS IT WITH?
She is used to tough roles. Whether she’s a superheroine, a vampire, a werewolf or Carrie White, Chloë Grace Moretz collects a variety of characters. With Mother / Android, she embodies, for the first time, a mother in the making. This more mature and adult heroine allows her to show another facet of her talent as an actress.
By his side, Algee Smith, seen in Detroit, Judas and the Black Messiah and Euphoria, plays her boyfriend and the father of the child. Raúl Castillo, known for the series Looking Where Army of the dead, for his part, plays a resistance fighter who fights against the uprising of the androids.
WELL WORTH A LOOK ?
As everyone celebrates Christmas, Georgia (Chloë Grace Moretz) took refuge in the bathroom with her boyfriend (Algee smith). She has just learned that she is pregnant. Now is not the time to party. Feeling too young to become a mother, the young woman does not accept this pregnancy. But very quickly, the worst happens.
Androids, designed by humans to perform everyday tasks, lose control and rebel against their masters. These all-rounders become, overnight, weapons of mass destruction that will take control of the planet. For Georgia, you have to flee to survive.
Mother / Android follows the heroine and her boyfriend on their journey. As Georgia nears the end of her pregnancy, the parents-to-be want to travel to Boston undetected. Between post-apocalyptic thriller and intimate drama, Mother / Android is a beautiful metaphor on the fate of refugees and for good reason, its director Mattson tomlin was born during the Romanian revolution of 1989.
Netflix
In “Mother / Android”, the machines echo James Cameron’s “Terminator”.
In danger, his own parents had to separate from him, before he was adopted by an American family. The experience of the filmmaker – who is also the screenwriter of the film – gives flesh to the story. His sincere approach allows him to create a delicate, overwhelming, but also entertaining sci-fi story.
One of the major influences of this Mother / Android is also based on Terminator. The machines of the film, as revolted as in the classic by James Cameron, move at the speed of lightning and let glimpse their mechanical faces under their human features.
The entire film rests on the shoulders of Chloë Grace Moretz, who finds here a complex and exciting role. It delivers a poignant interpretation, especially in the last quarter of an hour. Despite some rhythm problems, Mother / Android remains a great proposition to discover.
