Appeared by surprise during the NACON Connect conference which took place in July 2020, RiMS Racing has been rather discreet since this announcement. However, sports bike enthusiasts have not been able to forget the promise of combining races on the handlebars of hypersport cars with a very advanced mechanical aspect, the image of what we saw in DRIFT 21 for example. Will Raceward Studio’s debut game kick the motorcycle game swarm with a refreshing approach? Answer in our test!
On paper, RiMS Racing had nevertheless sold us a little dream. It must be said that, as a biker, we liked to be pitched a game that would put beautiful mechanics at the center of the discussions, with a limited choice of mounts and circuits, but which would be totally compensated for by an avalanche of mechanical parts. We could transform our hypersport fresh out of the dealership into a real superbike capable of squatting all the podiums, and without even getting dirty on our hands. In addition, although this is the first game from Raceward Studio, this new entity is made up of vtrans from Milestone, which is quite reassuring when it comes to motorcycles. Finally, the game is said by Nacon who, in passing, provided the KT Engine from Kylotonn, a graphics engine that had worked wonders on two wheels in the game TT Isle on Man – Ride on the Edge. It is therefore full of confidence that we embarked on the test of this game. And the first moments were rather exciting with a nice intro stuffed with track missiles from the biggest motorcycle manufacturers.
After creating our avatar, the game asks us to make our first big choice: that of our mount. Here no money or nothing, just a pure question of personal preferences, knowing that we will not be able to change bikes for a long time, the second wheel being billed full price. Eight hypersport therefore share the poster, from the largest manufacturers. The good news is that we start the list right away with some very recent models. Aprilia RSV4 1100 Factory 2020, BMW M1000 RR 2021, Ducati Panigale V4R 2020, Yamaha YZF-R 2020, Honda CBR 1000RR ABS 2019, etc … A 2019 Honda Fireblade? Strange, especially since its replacement, the 1000RR-R (a radically different, more beautiful and more powerful mount) has been available since 2020! Why did you use an old model? It is also the same story with the Kawasaki ZX-10RR which is presented in the 2019 vintage, while the bike has also changed radically in 2021. It is less disturbing for the Suzuki GSX-R 1000 and MV Agusta F4 RC which are also in vintage 2019, but which have not really changed since that date. In short, too bad for the fans, and one wonders if commercial agreements are not hidden behind all this.
In our case, after having hesitated for a long time between Noale’s beast and the Munich missile, we opted for deutsche qualitt. We then discover our garage, which is a pretty two-story facility. At the top, the personalization of our character, with his driving style: picking up Mick Doohan fawn or the shoulder rubbing the track on the Quartararo, each adjustment is possible. Regarding the look, we can also undermine our pilot (man or woman) from head to toe thanks to the catalog of many accessories, even if the offer is much more limited than in the RIDE series from Milestone. Arai or AGV helmets (but no Shark), or even leathers, boots and gloves from Alpinestars, there will be just about everyone’s taste. The ground floor is reserved for the heart of the subject, namely the mechanics, the preparation of our car, and the R&D areas. Truth be told, there isn’t much new under the sun, and if you’ve spent a few hours playing a game like F1 2021, or the latest WRC, you’ll find that RiMS is more than largely inspired by it, without however reaching the depth of its models.
The real surprise is next to the mechanical parts store, where you can find hundreds of parts all from the catalog of major manufacturers. We really appreciate the meticulousness of the studio, which has carefully modeled each of them. Hlin fork, Brembo brakes and pads, DID transmission chains, Yoshimura, Arrow and Akrapovic exhausts, OZ Racing or Marchesini rims. In short, everything is there in the smallest details. The motorcycle is made up of a multitude of parts, and apart from the screws, everything is available on the unit in multiple references. Of course, the OEM (stock) parts are the cheapest and the least efficient, while the high-end racing parts will be ruinous, but will bring huge gains in weight and performance. You should know that the game has an educational aspect, because each piece must be installed as in reality. Clearly, to change the front fork, you will have to remove the wheels, the braking system, the …
