REVIEW / FILM REVIEW – Will Smith is back in the limelight as Richard Williams, father of Venus and Serena Williams, two of the greatest tennis players of all time.
The Williams Method : tennis is in the spotlight
Definitely, tennis on the coast at the moment. After Borg vs McEnroe and more recently 5th Set, Reinaldo Marcus Green stages Williams sisters biopic, through the prism of their father Richard Williams. The opportunity for Will Smith to return to the front of the stage with a composition role that he carries with flying colors. To play young Venus and Serena Williams, two of the most talented players in the world, the production engages Saniyya Sidney and Demi Singleton respectively, who do an absolutely remarkable job.
The Williams Method therefore mainly focuses on Richard Williams, the father of the two tennis geniuses, who hatched a whole plan to make them famous. While he had a fairly limited knowledge of the sport, Richard Williams drew up a 78-page plan to imagine the training of the two future champions. The film thus stages the self-sacrifice of this father, ready to do anything so that his daughters have a future.
A touching father, who puts his own life aside to give himself body and soul to the work, using a method all his own. A method that decides to go against the grain via a strategy thought out upstream, so that everything runs smoothly. Even if it means putting the world of tennis on your back.
A superb collision between sport and cinema
The Williams Method it is much more than a sports film. You don’t have to be passionate about tennis to appreciate the work of Reinaldo Marcus Green. The latter stages an inspiring and endearing success story. The Williams Method is a beautiful meeting between sport and cinema. Two backgrounds that get married regularly to create sparks.
The tennis sequences are rather well filmed, and pleasant to watch. The artistic direction is also very successful, with Will Smith in the lead, who returns to the top of his game.
It’s a real winning forehand for Will Smith who plays Richard Williams with a lot of talent and desire. The actor gives himself completely in the skin of this atypical man, who rose up against customs, mores, habits, to define their own rules. An amazing man, a father who has no doubts, and a man motivated by unshakeable certainty, convinced that his plan will work against all odds. The Williams Method is so a great lesson in motivation and perseverance. A stimulating, inspiring film which tells the story of the Williams sisters with great tenderness.
Symbols of success
The Williams Method does not just tell about the success of two young girls. It is also that of a whole community. Of all the young African-Americans who want to get out of their daily lives, their difficult neighborhoods, taboos, clichés and racism. Here there is the struggle of an entire community to be heard and to be respected. Especially in the tennis world, predominantly dominated by white males. A true lesson in hope, this success story proves that anything can happen, with a lot of training, an entourage who believes in it, and a little luck.
A cocktail that was successful for the Williams sisters, have become an unprecedented sporting symbol. Since then, both players have reached the top of the WTA rankings. Venus Williams won seven Grand Slam titles, and her little sister Serena won 23 Grand Slam tournaments.
