REVIEW / OPINION SERIES – Considered by some to be a cult 90’s slasher, “Remember … Last Summer” is now available as a series aired on Amazon Prime Video. What is this new updated version worth?
Remember … last summer brought up to date on TV
Horror cinema did not wait until the 90s to supply us with slashers, even if this decade is important for this sub-genre with the inauguration of the saga. Scream. Other titles forged their small reputation at this time, including Remember … last summer. Jim Gillespie’s film is the prototype of the classic slasher that relies on a proven recipe without expressing the intention to take any step aside.
More than 20 years later, an eponymous series takes over based on the same assumption, with a few points. The plot is relocated to Hawaii and truly begins when a group of young people collide with someone on the road, in the middle of the night. They decide to get rid of the body and keep it a secret. However, someone is aware of their crime and it will be a pleasure to hunt them down, a year later, to make them pay. Who is this person ? It is, as in the film, the main interest of the show.
Let it be said quickly enough: Remember … last summer was, at best, a correct slasher in his days. In other words, he doesn’t deserve a prominent place in the history of this horrific branch. This clarification made, you will understand that the arrival of this declination in series is not necessarily a stimulating project on paper. But this observation can also be taken from the other end, by saying that there is an opportunity to sublimate the basic material by inscribing it in our time.
A flagrant lack of originality
Remember … last summer à la sauce 2021 unfortunately does not achieve its objective. Indeed, the scenario tries the bet of the contemporary taking place nowadays, with all that that implies when you are a teenager: social networks, love affairs, sometimes complex relationships with parents, drugs and alcohol …
In the first three episodes to which we were able to have preview access, we feel the urge for the script to develop characters before highlighting the purely horrific layer. Intention to which we would like to adhere, if young people were interesting figures. Unfortunately, the television offer is such that there is so much better elsewhere to evoke the pitfalls of adolescence. As for the killer, the very bad idea is not to resume the appearance he had in the film. His hook and his fisherman’s costume helped to build his aura, which also went wonderfully with the decor of a port city. More of that here with this transition to Hawaii, and we are thus pouring a little more into the mundane.
Therefore, it seems complicated to be passionate about the suspense that is developed. When things get carried away with scenes of tension, we get caught up in the game a bit with some bloody effects that give us what we came for. Nevertheless, on these first episodes, moments of terror can be counted on the fingers of one hand and we see that the instigation of fear requires less staging than hackneyed effects.
A disappointment for horror fans
Perhaps an adolescent audience, less familiar with the genre and its history, will find it useful by following characters who are the fruit of our time. But one really wonders how they will be able to tremble in front of this proposal which does not even have for it the retro charm of certain old titles. On the other hand, those accustomed to horror cinema may encounter serious difficulties in hanging on to this updated version. Perhaps, too, the suspense surrounding the identity of the killer will result in a surprising and satisfying revelation. In the original film, we remember that the outcome was missed. We hope that the series will not take the same direction, because that would mean that it did not even know how to match a base material however not very folichon.
