CRITICAL / REVIEWS SERIES: In “Young and Golri”, Prune, humorist, passes from young single woman to stepmother while she still considers herself as a child.
Young and Golri : become a mother-in-law at 25
Voted best series of the 2021 edition of the Séries Mania Festival, Young and Golri is a mini-series about comedy, love and motherhood. Agnes Hurstel plays Prune, a twenty-five-year-old comedian who sees her life change when she meets Francis (Jonathan lambert). If falling in love with a forty-seven-year-old man was already quite an upheaval, being a mother-in-law overnight is even more so. For a woman who uses a baby’s cry as a ringtone to remember her pill, this meeting will turn everything upside down. Without forgetting that his aversion to children is the high point of his sketches.
In addition to playing Prune, Agnès Hurstel is also the creator of the series, and just like her character, she started with the stand-up. The comedians Paul Mirabel, Nordine Ganso and Marie Papillon play his stand-up friends but also a little their own role. Thanks to his dark humor, Agnès Hurstel makes us laugh about everything. On the production side, Fanny Sidney (Ten percent) is in charge.
An intergenerational series
In Young and Golri, age is a central topic. First, the question of age is brought up when Prune meets Francis, a man as old as his father. This age difference is as confusing for Prune and her six years of mental age as it is for Francis, breathless going up the stairs.
From the top of his six years, Alma, Francis’s daughter, looks more mature than Prune. She is aware of global warming, knows all of Napoleon’s life and is worried about plastic in the oceans. Prune, jealous of the model child, will do everything to be loved by her. Prune therefore feels too young to take care of a child but also feels old next to her – she does not understand anything about TikTok.
Talk about today
Even if we take great pleasure in seeing the galleys in which Prune is sinking, Young and Golri also evokes alternative routes. Talking about becoming a mother-in-law so young is talking about a current subject. Indeed, the series is interested in this rather unknown phenomenon of motherhood. Plum is not the evil stepmother from a fairy tale, she is the modern heroine of her own story. A story she had imagined without children. She must find your place in this family that she integrates along the way, and decide what role she wishes to play in it. Should she be an authority figure or a friend for Alma? She has to find the right balance.
The relationship between Prune and Alma is built little by little, over the course of the episodes, without ever taking narrative shortcuts. The young Jehanne Pasquet is quite remarkable, this mini “I know everything” with a mischievous look captivates the viewer. The latter and Thomas Gioria, who plays the brother of Prune, a future gendarme follower of the spinning, embody the lightness and fun of the series. The comedy emanates from these two characters who are younger and more innocent and therefore less cynical than Prune.
