At the end of 2021, the legendary Grand Theft Auto III celebrates its 20th anniversary. If the impact that the title of Rockstar Games had on millions of players is no longer to be proven, we must not forget that it has also marked many developers. His influence can also be felt on the work of creators of games significantly different from him.
GTA 3 indirectly influenced the creation of Resident Evil 7 biohazard. This surprisingly surprising statement could not be more official. It comes out of the mouth of Kôshi Nakanishi, the director of the game from Capcom.
To celebrate 20 years of Grand Theft Auto III, Sony asked developers from different studios to speak on the Rockstar monument. And among the people questioned is Kôshi Nakanishi, the director of Resident Evil 7 biohazard.
The Japanese director does not hide that he was impressed by the work done by the developers of GTA 3. The impact it has had on the video game industry, however, made him want to go against the grain. . This is what he says brought Resident Evil 7 to life many years later:
I remember thinking “how could they make this kind of game on PS2?” My point is about the gameplay as well as the technology. In response to the explosion of open world games that followed, I decided to do the exact opposite, creating a tight, dense little horror game. This is how Resident Evil 7 was born. In a way, Resident Evil 7 may well have been born because of GTA 3. Thank you and congratulations on 20 years of GTA 3.
Resident Evil 7, the anti-GTA 3?
This video game response may seem very late but in any case this is how Kôshi Nakanishi presents it. As the article published on the PlayStation Blog shows, GTA 3 has touched many developers. And this, in different ways.
Note, however, that GTA 3 did not invent everything. Yu Suzuki has also already praised the influence his Shenmue has had on Rockstar’s open world game.
As a reminder, players who have missed Grand Theft Auto III will soon be able to catch up. Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, which contains the remastered version of GTA 3, will be released on November 11.
