Produced in 2007, “Rec” is a classic of horror and zombie cinema. During the filming, directors Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza shot several endings to deceive the actors and keep the mystery until the end.
When Rec was launching a fashion
In 2007 the Spanish horror cinema gave us a little slap with Rec. Almost at the same time as Cloverfield, directors Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza dusted off the kind of found footage. As in The Blair Witch Project (1999), the film is presented as if it were a real recorded recording. In this case, we follow Angela Vidal, host of the show While you are sleeping. All the images the viewer sees come from the recording of Angela’s cameraman following her that night. No editing and therefore no special effects. This is the feeling that must emerge in front of the film and thus increase the tension tenfold.
Angela and her cameraman will thus accompany a team of firefighters from Barcelona called to intervene in a building. They have no idea that they are going to be quarantined and then be locked up with a horde of zombies …
Yes Rec has so marked the spirits it is by its staging so particular. The film is above all realistic and gives the viewer the feeling that the images are real. To accentuate this feeling, the directors called on little-known performers. For the role of Angela Vidal, they even hired Manuela Velasco, then a real television presenter. Also, the full script was not given to them so that their surprise was real. They had to improvise often as we explained in our article.
Another end exists
To go even further, the filmmakers shot two alternative endings. In the official, Angela is hidden in the attic. In the dark, it can be seen only thanks to the infrared effect of the camera, before it is carried away by a creature. Not wishing to reveal the end to the actors, they therefore asked Manuela Velasco to shoot two more sequences. In one, she manages to leave the attic and go down the stairs in the dark by the way in the midst of motionless zombies. In the other, she is immediately attacked by the old lady, Madame Izquierdo, after leaving the attic.
In a bonus DVD of Rec, the actress explains thatshe thought until the last moment that her character was going to make it. The indications of the two directors being intentionally minimal, she had to simply go down and pass in front of the infected ones. On the day of filming things turned out to be a little different from what was written in the script.
I was told, “Go downstairs with the camera and get out.” You fall on the infected, and you react ”. So I go out with the camera and I come across Mrs. Izquierdo, who was in a state of panic, as at the beginning of the film… My reaction was to immediately return to the room. But inside, team members were pushing me, telling me I had to get out. I said to myself “I do what is written, I go down and I run”. And when I passed by Mme Izquierdo, she bit me. And there you have it, the directors killed me!
What fate for Angela Vidal?
This tragic end of Angela Vidal was therefore not used in the end. Paco Plaza and Jaume Balagueró simply wanted deceive the actress and the other actors. The real end that has always been envisioned by filmmakers and indeed the one we see in the film. So it is done carried by Medeiros, the creature of the attic. To understand what is happening to him at this moment, we must refer to the scene at the end of Rec 2 (2009).
Angela was actually caught by the creature that passed a parasite through her mouth. After that she is not the same. She is then picked up by a squad in Rec 4: Apocalypse and transported to a boat where tests are carried out on it.
